Daniel Defoe was imprisoned for his gossip column writing in 1703

Oh fair point, I dont think I was suggesting that this is an entirely new thing. More that at least *some* of the criticism of Scout seems to miss the point that plenty of New Zealanders like this stuff.

Perhaps being a cheerleader for capitalist self-interest goes with the gossip-columnist thing. When Robinson Crusoe eventually returns to civilisation he learns that his prudent investments made years beforehand have effectively set him up for the remainder of his life. This discovery is presented as an emotional high point, with the former castaway so overcome by a sense of self-congratulation that he needs to take a wee lie down.
Rachel Glucina is going to be leading a small but perfectly formed team to dominate entertainment news in New Zealand and beyond.
"Small but perfectly formed" used to be a favourite phrase of Metro founder Warwick Roger, both in and out of his Felicity Ferret frock.

So …. what does it say if shallow recycled entertainment news is popular in NZ?
It says Keewees prefer Kool-Aide over Raro.

Ian Dalziel, in reply to
“shallow recycled entertainment news” has been a huge feature of mass media since it began!
Even that Bible blockbuster was all who’s begetting who…

I hope nobody dobs my hairdresser in?
But is a business an “association of persons”. And why do they have this legal protection, over and above trademark law?
I see there’s a $40 fine for wearing an unauthorised Scout badge… Dib dib dib

The name of Mediaworks' new venture has upset the NZ Scout Association whose values of "have respect, do what is right, and be positive" do not align with Glucina's "sex, scandal and gossip" offerings. The Association is taking legal advice.

Ooo, I wonder if we have the same haircut? But I doubt it. Annabel’s too awesome to allow that. Now I just wish I’d thought to suggest to her that she get the domain name.

Seems a small faction of right-wing Aucklanders has some talent for getting others to fund their megaphones. Troughers.

...merely to add an 'i' to be an anagram of 'coitus'!
Coincidence? Or not...? -

Update: The account is unlocked again, with the explanation that they’re trying to get rid of fake followers.
Am I alone in taking that as a "purging all who dare take issue with anything I say" response?
“Small but perfectly formed” used to be a favourite phrase of Metro founder Warwick Roger, both in and out of his Felicity Ferret frock.
Also a heavily used phrase under the tenure of Mr Ralston who I see is a fave of snout.

Joe Wylie, in reply to
There was also "small but powerful", which was never applied to people, only to BMWs.

No, it appears they actually had nearly 50% fake followers, very suddenly.

"small but perfectly formed" was the way Private Eye mocked Donald Trelford, editor of the Observer from 1975, whenever it referred to him (which was practically every issue while I was in the UK through the 1980s).

I reckon they could be tricked into renaming as the somewhat trendy "iScout"...worth a try? :)

Yes, many of The Ferret's catchphrases in Metro were verbatim from Private Eye.

A very interesting Stop Press story on Scout.
They talk to Glen Kyne, director of integrated content at Mediaworks:
At present, the display ads on the site are promoting the upcoming season of The Block NZ and other MediaWorks assets (there's also an ad for the movie Everest). Cross promotion is a big part of its remit, he says, but display advertising is not the main focus. Instead, he says it will be concentrating on native advertising and integrating brands into Scout TV.
He says this is the first time MediaWorks has really done native advertising properly. Its integration team has plenty of experience working brands into TV shows, although he says there are often restrictions with licensed formats like The Block. And its radio arm does it every day, he says, and has been doing it for years. So it’s not a huge stretch to bring that discipline online and “work with brands that want to tell their story” in a way that makes sense to Scout's audience.
Well, they're being upfront about it. I can see why no one wanted it anywhere near the newsroom.

Ah... Private Eye. Now we're talking real satire, crafted with integrity and humour. If I remember correctly they initially coined the phrase for Sunday Times editor Harold Evans then used it quite freely to denigrate any person of lesser stature who was in their sights. I don't think Cook & Ingrams had anything in particular against short people, but the phrase took on a life of its own.
Likewise expressions such as "Ugandan relations" (extra-marital sex), and "Tired and emotional" (pissed) became an integral part of the Eye lexicon. I was a happy subscriber for many years.
