Field Theory: Numbers Game

If anyone has a right to be upset about the fans, it's the cyclists. After the most recent climb, I don't want to watch anymore. What other sport allows spectators onto the field of play, to hit, throw things at, and get in the way of, shoot the players, and cross the road fatally? It's an absolute debacle.
The Tour goes to the people, and it has to take them as it finds them*.
I'd hate to see the Tour lose that, since it's part of the charm. And yeah, the fans can be morons, but it would be worse for the sport if they were kept behind barriers. And it has been a part of the Tour from the beginning; it's inherent in road racing that you aren't in a hermetically sealed environment, you have to be in a shared space.
* Not my line. I think from Nicholson's The Great Bike Race.

Not sure if it would be possible to put them behind barriers. 200 km stages, two sides of the road, that's a lot of barriers. Even if you only had to do a quarter of the distance, it's 100 km of barriers.

Jo S,
I'm loving the various incarnations of 'throbbing forehead' thunderous looks that this series is inducing in Ricky Ponting ........
One of the best laughs I've had in a while was the look on his face after that beautifully dropped slips catch .....

Dude looks more like George Bush Jr every day.
Part of the Ashes appeal for me, (as well as seeing the Aussies getting beaten) is that the grounds are so damn good, just perfect places to watch and play cricket. They get big crowds, they still serve proper pints in a glass (in the members stands at least) and it creates a really nice vibe. Also, there just seems to be more on the line in this series, it is probably the top rivalry in test cricket.
Re Beckham, as mentioned, he's an East End lad from Leytonstone. He's not popular with my team as that's in our catchment yet ever since he was a little boy he only ever wanted to play for Man Utd. This is why, when he used to visit Upton Park with Man U, the Hammers fans used to speculate on mass that Mrs Becks had an avid enthusiasm for, ahem, the Greek way of avoiding conception.

You really don't understand the appeal of the Ashes?? Why not just say you don't like cricket and be done with it?

It's just that the TdF riders don't go fast enough. You never see a fan trying to chase a WRC car, do you?

Hadyn does say that, on a very regular basis, but is making a huge effort to try and get into it.

What Naly said.
I don't like cricket (oh no), but I am trying to start to appreciate it to some degree (yeah).
I do understand the big rivalry thing (like the Yankees-Red Sox), but I'm not going to go out of my way to watch it.

Great, coz if you're gonna write stats-heavy posts, then this is your game!
If you'd gone out of your way to watch the 5th morning of the Lords test (you would have been tucked up by 11.30) I reckon you might have raised your appreciation. Although Flintoff's posing did get a mite tiresome.
