One of the more interesting things I've heard so far has been the threat of civil disobeyers to do a Marx Jones over Eden Park. So far Jones himself has opted out... because he doesn't have a heli licence.

It is a mediocre advert, simple as that. It is embarassing and inept.

that would also be spectacularly stupid

do a Marx Jones
eh? I don't love our government but this aint 1981. Marx Jones is a hero because of the undeniable rightness of the cause, not just dropping shit on people is cool if you want to make ANY political point that pops into your head.

That would be bizarre.
1981 tour protest=cool!
This commercially-driven wankery 30 years later? Forgeddit it, mate.

I can easily see it backfiring on those behind the control stick. Also, wouldn’t it attract the attention of Defence early warning systems, unlike in 1981? It’s a bit like dynamiting fish à la Croc Dundee – looks fun and spectacular in theory, but I doubt many people would get away with it in a post-9/11 world. Personally I’d stick with culture-jamming.

I don’t get the relentless negativity, I really don’t.
We’ve organised to fly to Queenstown and see a friend who has relocated there, then head over to check out the new stadium in Dunedin with five friends from Ireland to watch the game between Ireland and Italy.
Big mistake. We can’t anywhere to stay that isn’t angling to price gouge to the max. If that is Dunedin, then all I can think is the accommodation sector in this country has the mentality of greedy small town shopkeeper and is in the grip of a collective madness brought on by a short sighted greed. Visitors to our country – our guests – are going to get to behold an opportunist freeding frenzy at their expense every bit as disgusting and short sighted as the madness that gripped the London rioters, only without the excuse of desperation.
We’ve cancelled the whole Dunedin thing. We’ll all stay with our friend in Queenstown and watch it on the telly. Fuck getting ripped off by a bunch of tossers who think price gouging is not just acceptable, but something to be proud of. The foreign press is going to eat our hospitality sector alive for all the base greed and ripping off that will be going on in front of their eyes, and hopefully we will get the decade in the tourism wilderness we seem intent on richly deserving.
So yeah, hard to get excited about it when the moment you do, you are confronted by an orgy of greed.

Given the foreign heads of state, etc, in attendance, I can imagine any such flights meeting surface-to-air missiles from the accompanying imported defence forces.
It'd be like someone trying to flourbomb the 1999 APEC conference, the only time I've seen silent black helicopters over our suburbs. Manning wasn't exaggerating in that article. They don't muck around.
More to the point, any violent protest against a national religion will not gain public sympathy.

One I got in my inbox today concerning the RWC – a spin off from SKY’s abhorrent military-themed campaign – ended with the words “Do it now cupcake.”
I don't talk to my snacks -- that's just weird. :)

Figures for that please Sacha (i.e that worship of Rugby Union/the All Blacks is ANZ's national religion.)

As someone who doesn't read the paper, watch TV news or see any ads which aren't on mute and fast-forward, I think the apparent "joylessness" is coming from another direction entirely. She says, pointedly.

Asking politely – and what direction would that be Danielle? A genuine question from Islander, none of whose whanau and very few of whose friends will be having a bar of the supposed
“Stadium of 4 Million”. -

*a* religion.
and that's a cultural rather than statistical observation -

“a national religion”
(your words)
-so: any figures for this 'cultural '
observation? My non-figured bet is less than half of the sportsfans here actually support Rugby Union. And 'half the sportsfans' is waaay less than half the population.

Sue,

I have some friends who are going to the game & booked accommodation super early, they are not paying anything unreasonable. But they got in super early.
and it's Ireland, in Dunedin. That's a popular game. So everywhere in Dunedin is booked out that weekend, so what little left is the tacky price gougers.
So maybe don't blame the entire hospitably sector becuase I'm not sure they are trying to rip everyone off.
-
So Fitzie is implying that flannelette PJs are an aid to abstinence. Turns out I've either been doing the sex or the pyjama wearing wrong all these years.

Quite. And without knowing what Tom was being asked to pay, I'm not sure even that's fair. It's not long before the tournament in a city where seats at the stadium far, far outnumber the number of accommodation beds. At this point, yes, whatever scarce accommodation remains is going to be expensive.
-
Russell Brown, in reply to
Another way of looking at it is that the tournament is being marketed – for whatever reason, I don’t want to get all Lacanian on your collective arses – as something utterly joyless. The only people who are promoting fun are those in the business of selling alcohol, but then they always do.
Well, no. The embarrassing Abstain campaign isn't marketing for the tournament, it's for a telephone company which isn't a stranger to marketing balls-ups.
The Sky campaign is for a broadcaster, one of four offering coverage. Maori Television wants us to watch its coverage of all 48 games too, but its way of telling us is much happier.
The tournament itself is being launched with fireworks, massed waka and a Finn brothers show, and accompanied by a nationwide cultural festival.
I do feel sorry for Martin Snedden. Debacles like the 'Abstain' thing don't help him put on a good tournament, and neither does having to work with Murray McCully. But neither of those things are themselves the tournament.

Look, far be it from me to try to quash your semi-professional parade-raining about this issue. It's just between you and Gio "Liveblogger of the Rugby Apocalypse" Tiso, Hadyn's RWC threads are a bit... iffy for me at the moment. Of course you're free to proclaim how uninterested you are and how terrible it all is in every other post. I just wanted to express a mild discomfort with that.
(Standard disclaimer: used to hate rugby at school; quite like watching games in adulthood, especially with my grandad; completely acknowledge manifold issues with the culture of the sport, particularly the gendered ones.)

Oh come on now. Their campaign is everywhere. I've seen a Maori TV poster once. And I don't much care about who's an official sponsor or who's "the tournament". My point is that two major campaigns thus far have plugged into this idea that the cup is something that we must, as opposite to will, enjoy. I don't think it's a coincidence, or an irrelevancy.
(And, really, it's going to "open with fireworks"? What a world we live in!)

Since you've included me in that, I don't think I've ever said a word about the cup on PAS except to react to the relentless (word of the week) complaint by Hadyn and Russell that people should stop being grumpy about it. People have a right and cause to be excited, just as other people have a right and cause to be grumpy. Stop telling us how we should bloody feel about this thing we're paying for and is not insignificantly rearranging our lives.
