we don't want to assume that Smith will be blessed with perfect health and stamina for every minute of the world cup, do we?
I'm sure we can find a fullback to play centre in a key game for the 4th world cup in a row.

Gareth Ward, in reply to
his last minute passes terrify me
He seems to have been showing his teammates how they work too - I spotted at least 3 0r 4 different ABs trying something pretty similar.

I am going to be a dissenting voice, and say I hate the freaking jersey. That is not a collar. From some angles, it looks like a neck brace. It's stupid. I like the *idea* of the collar. Just not the way they've done it.
And yes, they are tight, and that's nice, I suppose. But that's not enough.
Now, more importantly, that was some pretty, pretty rugby on Saturday. As someone said upthread, hard to tell because SA was pretty awful, but there was some very lovely skills being shown. it will be interesting to see what happens this weekend.

Tracey Nelson's game stats are up.
Talking point: Dan Carter No.2 in the tackle count!
-
Glenn Pearce, in reply to
Does that include the one on Smit in front of the goal posts ?

Interesting. Also shows what great games Hore and Crockett had (Richie being a given). Anyone that would consider putting Hore out to pasture needs their head read, IMhO. Pun intended.

I'm sure the coach and the selectors agree with you, but we don't want to assume that Smith will be blessed with perfect health and stamina for every minute of the world cup, do we?
Then they should pick a specialist Centre to back him up. If they're gonna pick a utility to back up those positions, I'd like one with half a brain.
Like Muliaina
(I joke, seriously, I joke)

Iz not grate joke.

Actually, no. Those stats don't include slipped tackles in the completed stats. Carter missed two of the total six missed tackles so it shows just how many tackles he was attempting (and completing 85% of them).

Nelson's data are great. Another interesting stat is Messam's carries, 2nd overall with only 35 minutes on the park, and just ahead of Thompson. They've also got similar lineout stats. Tough call since I don't think both will be on the bench.

I think you need to look at the effectiveness of those carries, though -- and Messam wasn't very effective. He goes into contact too upright and gets into trouble.

And I find them jarring and distracting. I’m not normally wedded to tradition but the shoe thing annoys me.
I obviously hate them. Only Nonu wears them on our side and I think it's a bit much and looks stupid. Also the white and gold boots look cool.

I like the 'collar'. But I'm hanging out for a peplum. ;)

Thomo had a good game in the lineout (so did Williams by the look of the stats). Can we remember who stole the ball from the SA lines?

Assuming what I googled was correct, gosh! That'd make for some interesting scrums

Paul Williams, in reply to
Yeah, I didn't think there was a steal, there were at least two turnovers, one they overthrew, one was messed up by their lock...
Russell, I agree Messam runs high, I figure it's something he's doing deliberately to look to hand off but if he's held up, yeah, we can lose the ball. Thompson played well and it was good he got the start. I still see Read and Kaino as a starting 8 and 6, not sure who's the best back up.
Oh and earlier in the thread, praise for Hore; couldn't agree more strongly. He had a fantastic game but I'd not see him as vice captain, I figure that's Read or Carter?

I was at the game with my boy. Out takes were
- Dan Carter was pretty ordinary, field kicking and goal kicking both poor and there wasn't much wind. Running and passing was good. I am a bit worried.
- Cory Jane's 30 (or 50) meter try the highlight
- Andrew Hore, everywhere and smiling
- Richie, best game I have seen from him this year, a big relief
- Piri, showed up Jimmy C on passing speed and little kicks
- SBW didn't do much
- I don't recall a pick and go - is that now gone or on ice for the Aussies?
- Food and drink at the cake tin are awfulOverall, they played well, but SA missed a lot of tackles and were quite naive on defense and blowing hard in teh last 30 mins
-
The new AB jersey.

They are calling ona higher power to win this WC.

What's with this US military shit 'assisting' NZ rugby. That Sky ad is bad enough without 'West Point psychologists' muscling in on our national game.
-
I dunno, being able to napalm the other team and/or pick them off with drone launched Hellfire missiles might be just the job for a tricky game. Show me where in the rules it says you can't?

- SBW didn't do muchI though Cowan played really well, albeit differently from Weepu. Cowan's defence was brilliant and he runs the ball more than Weepu does/did but I agree Weepu always adds a lot when he comes on.
SBW did not have an impact, odd for him too; he didn't look like he was clear about his role. Certainly Nonu played one of his better games.

Nah, the NZRB will, in all likelihood, behave like spoilsports and change the rules to suit the commercial aspect of the game and only allow sponsored weapons.
One thing that has intrigued me for a while is the attitude to the "Drop Goal" which now, well for the period of the tournament, be acceptable.
The commercialisation of the game has devalued it somewhat in my opinion and I have to ask why, in an age of satellite TV and instant replays, we spend horrendous amounts of money on stadia and the logistics of moving people around to watch games in nothing more than a business park?. Purists will still frown at someone referring to a "Rugby Pitch" and insist on the term "Rugby Field", Paddock being acceptable in some circles.
I would love to see more provincial rugby televised from places like Simpson Park in Morewa and not just on the Rugby Channel, than images of corporate box dwellers lording it over the poor punters drinking standardised beer from plastic safety glasses.
Yeah, bring on the drop goal, it's in the rules but let's bring the game back to the grass roots, bring it back to the people. Who knows, maybe we can bring the whole country back to the grass roots and tell our corporate masters that their time is over. -

And more from the "Who the fuck do you think you're kidding" file;
Adidas New Zealand is defending the high cost of All Blacks jerseys in the wake of revelations the same jersey is selling for half the price overseas.
The Rugby World Cup edition of this year's jersey costs more than $200 in most New Zealand retail outlets but the same jersey can be picked up for under $100 online in the United States.
Adidas New Zealand's country manager David Huggett told RadioSport that the cost depends to some extent on currency fluctuations.
"The price we set in New Zealand is relative to the local market and the price in which they pay overseas is largely driven against currency fluctuation which has changed quite significantly over the last couple of years.
"If you go back two years ago the cost of the All Blacks jersey was cheaper here in New Zealand
Right. The US Dollar plummets like a stone as our Dollar rockets to all time highs and it is still worth nothing if you want to buy an All Blacks Jersey.
Yeah, right, pull the other one, no, not that one... this one... -
