  • Guy Fawkes,

I also feel strongly on this. I recommend the petition "Ban private use of fireworks and allow public display only in New Zealand by 2014 " on Change.org.

  • Hard News: The non-binary council,

Bottom line surely, is that Len Brown is a fool and a bit sleazy and now it is in the open. Conspiracy theories on the other person or the way if came public are interesting but don't alter the fundamental point.

Just the same for the Dunne "affair", the Banks donations, the MSD kiosks etc.

  • Muse: OPEN HOUSE: Margaret Mahy, The…,

I can't think of Margaret Mahy without thinking about my son. We read so many of her stories together and took great delight from them. The great grumbler and the wonder tree was an especial favourite.

Thanks for many happy memories, the books will be alive for a long time yet.

  • Field Theory: All Blacks v Wallabies Tensionfest, in reply to Ross Mason,

I agree on the 3WM, been through the fire and came out stronger. I don't know about Robbie, he stuck with QC too long and he hasn't put together a decent tight five. I suspect he could be in trouble after the Aussie review.

  • Field Theory: All Blacks v Wallabies Tensionfest,

I loved it. Less tension than I expected, so glad the ABs started off with a hiss and a roar and never looked likely to fade. I was impressed with the whole squad (except SBW wtf!). Love the joy Jane and Dagg bring to their game .Cruden showed real guts and composure and I hear that Weepu had the flu (and a Tangi) but still fronted. Top effort.

  • Field Theory: My day in green and gold, in reply to Glenn Pearce,

I was at the game - My Telecom phone worked fine throughout, not that I could hear the calls!

I thought it was a great game, somethings I noticed that I don't pick up at home
    - at Welsh restarts the Bok Forwards were paired off with a Jumper and a Lifter and spread across the park - looked a good tactic
    - The infamous penalty kick that missed, well there was a wind and the ball did curl and the linesman was straight under the post - his view would have been better than anyone elses, I think a TV replay would have been misleading
    - The Box defence was brilliant, lots of time the last man made a crucial tackle.

I was supporting Wales and they played with passion - but - they seemed to want to do endless phases in the Bok half and look for penalties, not a lot of penetration. In the first 5 minutes the Boks attack was awesome, they never approached that level again.

  • Hard News: The Minister's Brain Has Exploded,

I wonder how Jane Clifton will write her Listener article on this without mentioning McCully. Maybe it is all the fault of the IRB again -

  • Field Theory: What to watch, in reply to Geoff Lealand,

So what is with Waikato this year? Top of the table, wins over Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury and Otago, but thrashed by the Bucket heads.

Manawatu - team of the year by far!!

  • Field Theory: All Blacks v South Africa…,

Come on folks, it was a good win, lets be happy with that. Doesn't prove anything for the WC but what the hey. All the talk before hand was that we would dominate scrums and Wallabies were dangerous in the backs. I would call it no better than parity in scrums (until the last 10 minutes) and we absolutely dominated in the backs, Carter / Nonu / Smith were as good as I have ever seen.

It did raise a few issues up for me, namely

    1) SBW hasn't made an impact off the bench all year and he only covers for one position - so what is his (rugby) value proposition?
    2) Wyatt Crockett is not yet AB quality, again giving away scrum penalties.,

NZ History site has some great material on the '81 tour,

'The 1981 Springbok rugby tour', http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/culture/1981-springbok-tour (Ministry for Culture and Heritage)

I especially got lost in the media gallery
