The question he was asked was "Who is your favourite fascist dictator?" WTF was he supposed to say?
I haven't seen anything about this, but if that's the question, I'm surprised he didn't say Mussolini, given that it was he who basically allowed Enzo Ferrari to continue tuning and racing Fiats during the war before setting up Ferrari, and emphasised the fact he needed to win [at the same time as Hitler was doing the same thing to Porsche and Mercedes - leading to the beautiful Silver Arrow era].
Then, of course, there was the whole split in the 70's or 80's, where it was Enzo who more or less singlehandedly allowed the F1 to continue and Ecclestone to gain as much power and wealth he now wields.
Oh, and the sheer number of fans Ferrari has bought to his sport.
Not saying anything, but I'm just a lil' surprised and reckon Enzo's wheelspinning in his grave right now.

And the really funny thing is that Max did not appear to do this for any other reason than a lifelong ability to cavort around the world in a series of F1 parties, as president-assumed-for-life of the FIA. It does not appear that he has been paid off in any sort of bribe, he did not benefit financially, so why did he do it? why was the deal he made so pathetic?
'
You'll wanna revisit those figures. The FIA receives 25% of the funds, and will receive full rights to all broadcast revenue in 2020, as part of the agreement.
And remember that 1995 was one of the worst seasons of Formula 1 to date - Senna died the year before, three (I think) teams were in financial difficulty and four or so circuits were in the same situation. And that was the year the weather caused absolute carnage with shitloads of races halted due to rain.
Don't forget also that Mosley was elected to the FIA four times, not made 'life president', and is standing down this year [is it this year already? Shit!]

It's about time the women played 5 set matches.
Seriously. I have been asking this question for years.
Why *don't* they?

Mussolini is too obvious, too 'supporting ferrari' for someone who should be representing the whole organisation.
Clearly General Franco was the best answer.

I believe it has something to do with three sets being long enough to check them all out and put them on TV looking scrummy, and it frees up time on the courts for men to play the 'real tennis'. Not that many people in tennis will admit it - there were hints of it last week though at Wimbledon with the womens top seeds being put on the outside courts while some attractive lower seeds were moved into the limelight.

I bet he really wanted to say Thatcher.

Erm... really?

Among those who have expressed outrage over Ecclestone's remarks is Ronald Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress. Lauder said someone with Ecclestone's views should not be allowed to run such an important and popular racing series.
But Ecclestone said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press that "I think the people who are saying that (I should resign) haven't got the power to say these things."
If the WJC is influential, he said, "it's a pity they didn't sort the banks out." Asked to elaborate, Ecclestone said, "They have a lot of influence everywhere."
Although in his defence, he was probably asked which race has the most influence on international finance, and you'd have to go with the jews, right?

Oooh no, I'm got getting into that debate again.
Also I lost it somewhere in this thread, who was the Nazi? The guy who talked about Hitler or the guy who had a military domme fetish? Or is it just F1 as a whole?
ps. I doubt Ecclestone even has an ethos beyond making himself rich and being a prick

I couldn't agree more. And no, that's not ONLY because I want to see Sharapova play for 4 hours straight.

3410,
Federer and Roddick played the equivalent of seven sets in the Wimbledon final.

We debated this last night on the Dropkicks (podcast up soon). I see no reason why the women can't play five sets. It means they won't play doubles anymore but that's fine.
I think Noizy said that it was almost a value for money argument. Unless ticket's to the womens' events are cheaper then they should play for the same number of sets

Did you mention that the problem with having women play five sets is that there are so many mismatches, particularly in early rounds of tournaments?
Because that’s the official reason.

And, in the meantime, Federer confirms that he’s actually becoming a bit of a twat

Also I lost it somewhere in this thread, who was the Nazi? The guy who talked about Hitler or the guy who had a military domme fetish? Or is it just F1 as a whole?
I'll confess that originally when I heard the story I conflated Mosley with Ecclestone, due to the Nazi themed sex party thing. I seem to recall that Mosley had in fact been reasonably economical with his words after that incident, and who knows, maybe he just enjoys roleplaying with swastikas and that's that.
Ecclestone, on the other hand, is bonkers. As in, stark raving. And what he's said since the interview even more than the interview itself puts him squarely in the Nazi sympathiser camp. Apart from the bit I quoted above, which has a certain pricelessness to it, in his "explanation" he claimed that Hitler had done a sterling job until 1938, and that the horrible things that happened later were probably not his idea anyhow. What a peach of a guy.
-
I'm getting horrible Sarah Palin flashbacks on this thread - defending someone I actually can't stand.
The second half of the second column I did here was about Mosley. He didn't shut up, he sued the News of the World for invasion of privacy and won - an experience that may well have been just extra peachy keen for his wife. (Oddly this section of his Wikipedia article has vanished.)
But there were no swastikas. There were no Nazi uniforms. The paper offered the dominatrix several thousand extra pounds if she could get him to do, y'know, something fascist. She said he never used the word 'Nazi' in their discussions - apparently the sound of German just gets him off.
I'm pretty shitted that I seem to be defending the guy, I just think it should be possible to criticize him for things he's actually done .
-
Ah, apologies, my recollection of the Mosley thing was obviously muddy. I relied on the (F1 obsessed) Italian media at the time, and they seemed pretty positive about the presence of insignia. Anyhow, as I say, even if there had been any, it's not as if it would be a substantive issue in and of itself. A fascist's a fascist's a fascist, it doesn't pay to focus on the decor too much, and I think as far as Ecclestone is concerned it's a pretty tight case because of them stated beliefs of his. I'd rather judge people on those.
Should be fun next time Jeremy Hardie puts in an appearance on the News Quiz.

Inclined to agree Emma. You'd have thought they could have found a more relevant thing to hang him up on.
Like fraud, for eample.
BTW, what do you make of Roger and his new threads?

Federer, eek, does nothing for me, he is sooo oh I don't know blah. Of course I recognise that he is one of the greatest tennis players of all time, sublime talent, but he just does nothing for me. So, Monday morning found me in the unusual position of supporting Roddick, who at least stirs emotion in me. Rage!
I loved Andre, adored Bjorn. Found Sampras to be a bit vanilla. Currently I am supporting Djokovic, he lifts me up and invariably drops me on my head, but that does not deter me in my admiration.
I blame my support of the Warriors for it all. If you can support the Warriors through all the ups and the many, many downs then you can take whatever disappointment other sportsmen throw at you on the chin. And come back for more.
-
BTW, what do you make of Roger and his new threads?
Sorry, dude, I'm a fan of the Singleted Chipmonk. Before that it was Andre - yes Patricia, Federer reminds me of Sampras.
Somewhere I have a picture of Goran Ivanesivic naked holding the Wimbledon trophy, but I still have some residual respect for Hadyn's eyes.
-

That would be a valid article about Federer being arrogant if he had worn that outfit on his way out to centre court. Except he didn't.
He wore this instead. You can see him in it as he walks out here.
So it's a Nike stunt: if you win, you can wear number 15. And fair enough. He did just make history, let him be a bit cocky. He's also holding a giant gold cup and smiling, what a prick.
Watching them walk out is fun, Federer doesn't look like he's off to play tennis. He's wearing white trousers for goodness sake, whereas Roddick looks like he's ready for a game of raquetball at the Y. But the killer from Fed is the gold belt, that belt really is awesome. And his head band is tied at the back, he don't need no steekin elastic.

You're mixing photos from different days there. You're not going to get that one past me.
But your main point is true; The Cabin Boy is now a walking singing dancing Nike / Gillete serving doll.
To be out trashed by Serena is no mean effort.

Yeah the photo is from the first day but he wore the same outfit on the final day (see the tvnz link, infact in the video he walks past the camera, no "15", so it'll be in his bag).
As for "cabin boy" (?) name me a professional athlete that doesn't toe the company line (regarding their sponsors)

Also I've just put up a new uniform post and it's about football, you'll love it LB

Now is not the time of night to read about uniforms.
But if you bemoan the Wellington division of the Hull City Merchandise Dept I'll bang my head on my coffee tomorrow morning.
Note to the Dom: Phoenix and Hull do not play in the same competition. Who cares if they have the same strip??
