  • Chris Waugh, in reply to Joe Wylie,

Public clocks seem to have vanished, as if time’s been privatised.

Kinda way off topic, but is the clock still on the hillside above Alexandra? I always liked that clock. First time I went to Alexandra we drove in after dark and the clock kinda hung there as if suspended in space as if put there by the solar system's horloger.

Locals race around the rock around the clock! So, yes. :-)

I quite like the Government Life building

Yeah, I used to wait for the bus under the Government Life Building, and I was oddly fond of the clock. I think it's a friendly enough edifice.

  • Rob Stowell,

Posy Parker has finally done something right. Or is that left?
Whatever, it's the first sign of life I've noticed in a while- even felt a twinge of optimism, and Spring so far off :)

A surprisingly large number of Cantabrians braved the freezing Easterly and grey skies from 2.30 onwards. Jim Anderton among many others emphasized the importance of keeping heritage buildings for future generations. Stone masons spoke of the clear possibility that parts of the cathedral could be repaired and new additions could be made.
David McPhail posed the question : "Do we need more parking spaces?"
as this would be the only thing left after demolishing the cathedral.
Participant of the rally were invited to walk along Montreal Street along Worcester Boulevard and to take a look at the building they were fighting for.

Nice logo. And David McPhail never seems to get any older! Thanks for the pics, Gudrun.

Although I don't have strong feelings about the Anglican Cathedral as a building, it is part of our heritage and I certainly think it should be restored/rebuilt if at all feasible.

Nice one Goodie. I like it especially when cropping across just under David Alexander's elbows and having Wiz in full flight against the backdrop of the Clarendon. Wiz was so much part of the Square for years, trading barbs with the likes of Ray Comfort and the Bible Lady against the backdrop of the mostly ugly tall buildings. This will probably be one of the last times we see him in his natural habitat.

As for the cathedrals, my family has one foot in the Anglican and one foot in the Basilica. Both were the locals for different older branches of my family; I was a flower girl for weddings in the Basilica, and the interior of the Anglican Cathedral had a special succour for me at difficult times of my life, but I can't get excited about either. Sad they have fallen; but the city has changed; it's gone as was and I see many opportunities for good things to take their places. At the same time I understand people being so upset.

I know David too -- I hadn't thought of your obvious Coastal connection! He is an artist of photography. I liked Gudrun's shot because that is so David, and so Wizard "performing" for the camera.

I put up the rainbow link for you; as it is a good "sign" for the Peninsula peoples.

The rainbows are lovely! But I feel I should point out that technically, they're all different rainbows -- even 2 people standing side by side see different ones, each caused by the light hitting a particular set of water droplets.

Whanau & self have many of David's artworks: one day, when we win Lotto, we will be able to gift him a sufficiency to just concentrate on what his heart & head lead him to do. Love Rachel too...so far have resisted putting David's wonderful cat & dog photos up - because that's for him & Rachel to do if they so feel like it-

Ah, I didn’t know that. I have an intense memory “photograph” of a brilliant double rainbow suddenly appearing against a stunning sky as I drove over the hill into Rapaki heading to Lyttelton in the mid 1990s. The rainbow was picture perfect and reached exactly from side to side of the harbour. Then good stuff happened (skeptics may laugh now).

The double rainbows are especially associated with Maru – who was a peace-loving ancestor, but also something else.
And Rapaki is a Maru place-

Like Te-oha-a-Maru and Te-tihi-a-Maru and, indeed, Te Kohu-a-Maru, just up on the bluff, right here-
for no reason I know, I end up living in Maru places (and writing about the being.)
