Great story Hebe. We must have posted at about the same time, and, um, I wasn't paying attention.
Was talking about how I'd love our girls to learn to surf. One of my greatest regrets in life is being a comparatively poor swimmer. We are working on making sure ours are confident and capable in the water, for their enjoyment, and safety.

Absolutely. The coast, even if you do not live nearby, is part of the Kiwi psyche.
Last summer wasn't great here, and the water quality was iffy, so this summer has been a joy. Our pair are true water babies: we lived at the beach from before the boys were born until a couple of years ago. I spent that very hot summer six and seven months pregnant with the twins and body-boarding or floating in the water much of every day to escape the heat and gravity!
A plan for next year for our family is to go bush and tramping more often. After all, this country's easy access to the outdoors was one of the great draws for me to return from the big city years ago. Living in the city, even a small one, it's too easy to let that slide by.

Re: water safety: I had an Irish flatmate who went swimming at Scarborough without realising it can be dangerous. She asked why, and I said, because of the rip. She didn't know what a rip was, so I had to explain. And then I explained how to escape one.
I got the distinct sense she thought I was making a fuss about nothing.
