  • Sofie Bribiesca,

crapping into a system that now leaks???

Well, first, don't do it. Those with a garden, go and dig a small hole (a spade is a perfect measure for length width, depth). crap in that by squatting (Kids know how to squat if you don't, ask them) then use leaves to cover to help decompose matter.and try to wee elsewhere if in the garden or go in a bucket if there is no outdoors but still try wees in a separate container. An outdoor toilet like this will last years. Transfer from bucket to bigger bin outside. It will break down and become great compost at a later time.
And then mixed with a bit of potting mix it will grow tomatoes straight from the container.

  • Islander,

In touch with NB family 3 hours ago - no evacuation. It was bruited as a possibility. People are being encouraged not flush loos (and Kim Hill's helpful advice is doubtless being followed) as it seems several (maybe many)sewerage pipes are broken. Water tankers(washed-out milk tankers) & the probability of water from the Avon (yech & ewww) are being organised. Supermarkets are promising to be back in operation by this evening. The CBD is going to be evacuated (who knew 'about 8000' people *live* there??) and 'Stay warm' is a very positive thought - a very windy & chill front is coming through tomorrow (helpful suggestions about 'how to stay warm when the electricity is off' (including a useful item on hypothermia) are to be found on the RNZ website, if the Civil Emergency site is still down.

11am Radio NZ news said damage at Christchurch School of Medicine means people at a conference have to find other accommodation.

Yikes - that's where I was working until a month ago. I'll have to email around and check on the state of things.

Bugger, just thinking about how JK and English have just spent all our "Hard Earned Money"™ Canterbury property investments...

I'm more thinking "really hope everyone's got their insurance in order" -- remember quite a few people being left in the financial crapper back in '87 after the Edgecumbe quake because, hey, I don't need insurance because bad shit's never going to happen to me... until it does.

And now there's been a plane crash killing nine people on the West Coast. It's a rough day for the south.

I've made a mental note to put together a disaster preparedness kit this week. It's a bit of a wake-up call.

This side of town (Riccarton) seems to have got off quite lightly. Chimneys are about the worst of it. Eastern Christchurch seems a lot worse.

Interesting to compare with 1888 Canterbury quake on almost the same day, same time, same magnitude.

The scale of what's happened is taking time to register; we sometimes worry about floods and tsunamis down here, but hardy ever about earthquakes.

I feel sad about all the Victorian buildings downtown that we've lost or will lose. Christchurch will look quite different without them.

[aftershock: pause to huddle in doorway]

However, no doubt the reconstruction will be good for the economy! Or good for those in engineering and construction, anyhow.

You would be most welcome too. If it was an earthquake, we would have a pre warning from Stella. She tells us when thunder is due very early into any bad weather. Last night, she was not a happy dog. Very frantic about venturing outside and I queried her behaviour because her bone was calling and she was prepared to forfeit. We suspected all was not well out there. Happily we also collect rainwater as we are on tank gas, so do always have 250L if the need arises. Also we got a 5.3kva (pure sinewave) generator so we would manage

I'm quite worried about Whisky Galore, actually. A few buildings around that Kilmore/Colombo area seem to have suffered badly.

I was in there two weeks ago -- I know what's on those shelves, and some of it won't be replaceable. And, quite seriously, Michael Fraser Milne has put so much heart and soul into that shop. So I really hope he hasn't fared too badly.

I did ask on Twitter earlier today, but I think it's hard for people to get to that part of town now.

I'm about 2 blocks from Whiskey Galore. Before the road was closed we walked down Kilmore St and didn't look specifically that way but didn't notice anything. Would have noticed a catastrophe I think.

Cafe Metro looked fine - just closed, and it's about 4 doors down.

That said, if the building is OK, the bottles may not me.

  • Steve Barnes,

Saw Bob Parker on TV earlier, flanked by two high ranking police officers, he was lovin' it. With 80 extra police coming down from Auckland and the Army on call, to help "clean up" you can guarantee the the Dairy farmers will now get all the water they want. According to Geologists this fault line is a bit of a mystery causing some to speculate the possibility of human interference and probable complicity with recent financial movements in the area,
"It's down to human interference and probable complicity with recent financial movements in the area" said Ivan Aluminiumhat, a spokesperson for Fear Without Frontiers who is opposing the 7pm-7am curfew, "It's all a plot to steal our water" he says "they bought off the wizard with a Queens medal in 2009 and it's been all downhill since". Ivan then scurried off into the remains of Whiskey Galore.
