  • Hilary Stace,

The Autism and Oughtisms blog is one of the best autism related ones I have come across, and local too. It s written by a mother of a young son. She doesn't write so often now. I mention it now as her latest one is about her role as storyteller and how her son will in the future tell his own stories. https://autismandoughtisms.wordpress.com/2014/12/23/the-storyteller/

That’s a really lovely post. And it makes the important point that things aren’t static.

For quite a while we thought Jim would always need some form of sheltering. When we had people around he was basically in his own bubble and didn’t interact. Then suddenly he started welcoming and farewelling guests. Now he’s really good and patient with children who come around and happy to organise the video gaming activity – and his interest in movies is a conversational standby with other adults.

On Saturday he not only joined us at a party (it was around the corner from his monthly autism drop-in meeting), he stayed on after Fiona went home because he was having a good time talking and dancing. To be fair, it was a great party and his father was playing a storming DJ set ;-)

First time I met Jimmy at your place, we startled each other when I literally bumped into him coming out of the bathroom fiddling with my fly. True story, and thank God things improved from there on in. :)

  • Kyle Matthews,

Really interesting watching someone else on 'tv'. He starts each cut with his hands off screen, but he uses them to much they always quickly come into screen. Nice reviews - haven't seen interstellar yet, but clearly I need to do so.

Spend a bit of dosh and get a good quality microphone.

What he said. You can always dirty up sound when you want it, but you need to capture clean first.

Also, look at the recording setup. I'm guessing Jim is doing his piece into a webcam on a laptop? Try using a separate webcam in a sound shell, with no screen in front, to take all the reverb out. Reverb is noise - you can add it in post but you can't get rid of it if it's in the raw recording (had to redo an entire 90 minute commentary to learn that the hard way, which always takes way more than 90 minutes to record...).

I built a frame out of garden stakes and tied egg cartons to it. Ridiculously low tech but makes a world of difference to the sound. The mic pokes through a gap and I have what I'm reading on a sloping platform (covered with green felt) below it. Long cable from mic to recording implement of choice so that it can be well away and reduce any hum or ambient noise. It's almost too dead, but I can liven it up if necessary afterwards. Took me a while to realise I didn't need a screen in front of me to interact with - but I'm not recording video, just spoken word.

  • kiwicmc,

Russell, If Jim is interested I have a few high quality web cams, that have a good microphone and high quality 720p optics. They were originally designed for video conferencing, but produce a great image.

They may or may not be better than what Jim is using currently, but he's welcome to them to try out.

I'm returning to NZ mid January so presuming the boat with the container on it makes it safely to the dock, I can arrange delivery.
