  • Hard News: Ups and Downs,

Yep, English eh? That's why it's the spoken that rules... simplifies it really nice like. Maybe... oh heck it's such a bastard I feel dumb even trying to say it should be like this or that. Certainly a losing battle...

But if that meme had of continued

NOT to get too linguistically prescriptive on it (that being nearly oxymoronic in the liberal world of linguistics where how she is spoke is what is right) but as a card-carrying pedant I simply must point out that correct written English (at this stage, and holding on by its fingernails) would be "had have continued" or, even better, the simpler "had continued".

No doubt "had of" will soon be acceptable and you're (your) breaking new ground here I'm (Im) sure, as that's (thats) how it sounds (sound's - well hey, anyone else noticed how the apostrophe's not dying but multiplying? Only in all the wrong places)... but it just looks ugly right now.

  • Hard News: Chaos in Kingsland,

What I don't understand is why the Crown/Defense never posited the possibility that Robin killed the family, David came home from his newspaper round, and found Robin in the lounge, struggled with him, took the rifle and killed Robin.

    Shhh, don't make things complicated.

And he said "I killed the prick" anyways.

    What are you all, deaf?

  • Field Theory: Black and White Stripes,

You've got half an hour to report on sport, this is major world sport event

Half an hour? Sport starts at 6.40 on both 1 and 3, each runs about 14 minutes, ad break then however long the weather gets. God I hate the weather. And health stories. But I digress...

Yep, Federer's the greatest. Don't think he'll win Wimbledon but how good would that be?

Thompson played flanker didn't he? Yeah he's been there but I reckon he's much better this season and will do a great job at 7, if he is indeed ahead of Latimer in the fetcher stakes...

it does seem that more than a couple of players have been picked on past form, rather than current.

That's probably why Hadyn was wondering where Masaga was... but then the Rocketman does usually turn up in black!

Not sure what Wulf's doing there though... I thought Rene Ranger looked promising too. Smith called him "green" at Eden Park on Sunday though...

I understand Adam Thompson may get the nod at 7 ahead of Latimer, which would be a good call in my book, I've been amazed watching his workrate in an inferior side. Imagine how good he could be as an All Black!

    and big questions (where's Masaga?).

He's off to Fiji (and Samoa) with the Juniors to work on his aerial ball skills and kicking, apparently. ABs backs coach Wayne Smith says they're treating wingers and fullbacks as more or less interchangeable now: wingers have to be able to kick and field high balls.

Get over it, you live in a lovely little country, playing a lovely little sport; decaying as we speak.

What a dick. For a start, NZ is way bigger than England and many other countries: we're a bit bigger than the whole UK in fact. Just not so many people!

Also, rugby's growing massively up north. Keeping those players here is only going to get harder and harder... time to give up that communist NZRU central contracting bizzo and pick from overseas?

The general sniffy fitba vs rugby tone from your correspondent just doesn't work does it? I mean, I'm a huge fan of the round ball code but there's room for many sports in my view.

  • Field Theory: An odd morning,

I watched the game down a pub this morning with several friends from various parts of the world, just us clad in Barça tops amongst a red-clad horde... we had a great time, and even escaped injury! Not the sort of thing one would necessarily be able to say in the UK.

(Query, based on profound ignorance: is being a ManU fan a bit like being a Yankees fan? Is the visceral hatred of the Manchester United shirt the same as what the wearers of the Yankees baseball cap get in the US?)

Sounds about right - Man U are evil and must be stopped. Good team of course, great manager. Hate them.

Although not the best in the world I thought Puyol had a big influence on the game this morning too.

Spot on - Captain Caveman was our pick for MOM...

  • Field Theory: All Misty-Eyed,

To be fair, according to Twitter he may be on a plane to Vanuatu with me and Megan and Jo. I'm just sayin'.

I'm sure he'll play even better after that!

I didn't know he read Rosemary McLeod...
