  • Up Front: Get Your Hand Off It,

If my memory serves me, there was a school in Bethlehem, Tauranga, in the mid 90s that banned 'Bad Jelly the Witch' because it had a witch in it. Or was it just that they censored it?

I bet every under 16 year old who gets pregnant (or an STD, or both) in NZ was exposed to evil information about contraception.

Thank Christ for Air NZ's direct Vancouver-Auckand

It is wonderful. We flew into Vancouver last month. Stepped off the plane, straight though customs and immigration and then sat in the sun for half an hour waiting for our ride. The crunch came, of course, at the border. All three of us, including the two US citizens had to go into the customs office and wait for me to be processed. There was a sign that stated that once we were in the room we were not allowed to leave and that there was no 'bathroom'. At least the immigration chappy was friendly and the delay was bearable. Anything is better than LAX.

  • Up Front: Actors Don't Hunt in Packs,

I do feel irritated when a person chooses to change in the loo when there are only two stalls available. The pool I go to doesn't offer individual changing rooms which is obviously not ideal for some people. But it is worse to use the shower as a loo than to use the loo as a changing room.

The irony I see is that after their expression of extreme modesty the young women in question will often appear wearing very skimpy togs and then drape themselves beside the pool, on display. (Which I am all in favour of, and have been known to do myself at time.)

'white' migrant with an 'American' accent

According to the very young woman who sold my husband a pair of jeans earlier this year his accent was "sooo excellent". She was desperately trying to sound as if she was a valley girl. Fortunately for me, my man is not from the west coast and has never said "like, you know".

So an Aviatrix is like a dominatrix with wings?

I get an image of a short, blond, moustached guy with a winged helmet and all dressed in black leather and chains. A bit early in the morning, I think.

Which is miles better than US sitcoms, where even when a couple are in bed having just had sex, the man will be wearing a t-shirt.

The last couple of lite comedies I have seen on DVD had the woman wearing a bra during sex! WTF! Even a nice lacy number aint gonna last the distance.

  • Up Front: Actors Don't Hunt in Packs,

I didn't know what "going commando" meant, until the recent post. So what has not having undies on got to do with your legs? Unless parts of you really hang low? The mind boggles at how uncomfortable that might be. (Also wondering what Arnie in a singlet and dirt has to do with no knickers, or maybe not...)

I make a point these days of being unashamed in communal changing rooms to be a good example to young women. The ones that change in the toilet cubicles must have some seriously ugly deformities to make getting changed over a toilet worth it. Although the bikinis they come out in don't hide much so I'm baffled, and intrigued.

  • Hard News: Friday Gold: An email…,

It is so frustrating coming in late on a converstation.

The English are so great at spelling names the way they're pronounced.

I'm off now to visit my cousins StJohn and Featherstonehaugh, in Marjorie Banks street, and then I'm off to Kiribati.

On the pronunciation of Paris, Moscow, etc. I can imagine the outrage of good english speakers of the world if non-english speakers tried to pronounce our cities in their own outlandish lingo.

This student might have learned a valuable lesson.
I think his mum's comment is wonderful.

  • Hard News: Undie Wankers,

I work (some of the time) at Otago Uni. Yes, there are some brown faces, and no doubt some of the students here come from lower socio homes, but the dominant group are white and obviously have money and a strong sense of entitlement.

On a tangent. Our neighbour's son (18 year old Maori, who lives with him mum not his Dad, our neighbour) recently spent 6 months in jail on a drugs charge (possession) which was dropped. You can bet if his daddy was a rich white man he wouldn't have waited a trial date, and eventual dropping of all charges, in prison. So what are the chances of the boy becoming a mongrel mob member now, do you think.
