  • Hard News: The humanity,

    Russell, I've had a great idea. You should start a live countdown clock on your front page titled: Where in the world is Jason Ede?

  • Hard News: The humanity, in reply to Tinakori,

    Did you not see Tova O’Brien with Winston Peters and Rebecca Wright with Laila Harre on Saturday night?

    That point about the guys being worse than the gals was Russell's not mine. I did see these reporters and thought the did themselves no favours, for sure.

  • Hard News: The humanity,

    Russell, I think you are onto something when you say:

    "But the collective culture (especially with male journalists) is quite often about the pursuit of the weakened."

    Jane Bowron wrote this excellent article;

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/opinion/10527142/Death-throes-low-blows-election-night-had-it-all

    And similarly, I think she was quite uncomfortable with some of the low blows. Journalists shouldn't display all the ugly characteristics of bullies. That's for sure.

  • Hard News: The humanity, in reply to linger,

    The role of journalism should be to hold the powerful – i.e., the government of the day – to account. Not the powerless – among which number we should include Cunliffe at the moment. The problem is not that journalists "attacked" Key at one point in the election campaign: rather, the problem is that they largely failed to do their jobs in the preceding six years.

    Bravo. Our fourth estate is a shambles - bigger egos in many of them than in politicians themselves. I do recall my first visit to TVNZ studios in Auckland. There was this huge (and I mean huge) photo of Paul Holmes as the first thing you saw in the entrance foyer. I had to laugh. They were obviously in the business of making "stars", more so than news.

  • Hard News: The sole party of government, in reply to Alfie,

    Thanks Alfie - all good reasons to flick over to TV3 for news too. We suspected it was likely to be more professional. Really stayed with TVOne at 6'oclock because we liked the weather graphics :-) and I'm quite impressed that Simon speaks Maori :-) :-).

    basically, synthetic cannabinoids were a very poor candidate for regulated sale in the first place.

    Exactly. And the evidence of that was spouted from every registrar in every emergency room around the country - as well as from other experts. So why would any government not just ban them from importation and sale altogether?

    If you've got a reason other than a commercial imperative - as advanced by those profiting from the sale of harmful products .. do tell.

    There was his f….d up Psychoactive Substances Bill.

    You might not have realised that his son (James Dunne), now a partner with Chen Palmer, was the lead lawyer lobbying his Dad on behalf of the synthetic cannabis importers;

    http://www.chenpalmer.com/people/james-dunne/

    However according to Peter - they never discussed it;

    How convenient the Cabinet office found no conflict of interest. More Dirty Politics, I suspect.

  • Hard News: The sole party of government, in reply to Not The Messiah,

    John Campbell seems to be the only Media entity out there that gives a damn.

    We purposefully watch One News and then flick over to Campbell Live at 7pm ON THE DOT. It's our way of 'digitally signalling' to TVNZ what a crap show they have in that time slot.

  • Hard News: The sole party of government, in reply to Richard Grevers,

    And am I too cynical thinking that the main reason Key will court Winston is to gag him from demanding an investigation of all the dirt?

    Well that's the very reason Winston gave as to why Key might call him. Winston said he wouldn't be bribed - he was there to do exactly what those that voted for him expected him to do - keep the Government honest. I think he knows a lot more than what has already come out in Dirty Politics. Here's hoping.
