  • Island Life: We have ways of making you torque,

    I never thought you'd be pro-highway Tom Beard! :)

So, I'll take the Trans Europe Express instead. And I'm definitely pro-Pocket Calculator.

  • Island Life: We have ways of making you torque,

    Wir fahr'n fahr'n fahr'n auf der Autobahn

Now that's an earworm that I'm happy to have for the next 22 minutes!

Though we could follow that up with "Ja, das Hokey Kokey".

  • Hard News: Now It's On,

turn New Zealand into the Lesbos/Cuba of the South Seas

Actually, that would be great for tourism.

  • Field Theory: Selling Out on a Thursday,

Yet, despite the huge number of games and the huge capacity of the park (albeit the fourth smallest), they sold out Fenway a record-breaking 456 consecutive games.

Given that The Red Sox represents a potential fan base of between 4 & 6 million people, most of whom would be within driving or transit distance of the park, it's not too surprising that they can regularly fill a park of about 1% of that population. It's like a Wellington team filling out a 5,000-seat stadium.

  • Hard News: Conscious Party,

Everyone who's seen one of those NZ Post ads with the guy finding the girl's wallet, or the young man with the new baby and the estranged father, will have heard the song

So, I must have heard it, but ... nope, not ringing any bells. Even that irritating Elemeno P song from the Telecom ad sticks in one's brain, in exactly the same way as a rusty harpoon would.

it starts "absence makes the heart grow fonder..."

So the award must have been for original lyrics, then. I prefer the only slightly less cliched line "Absinthe makes the heart grow larger".

It's not hip kids music, it's very very mainstream.

    That's what I figured.

  • Hard News: Conscious Party,

Is it just me who cannot think of an Op Shop song? You mention something called "One Day", but nothing comes to mind. Am I out of sync with what the hip kids are listening to?

  • Up Front: Young and Sort of Free,

__Lolita__ -- a novel whose central character/narrator is not only a paedophile but a kidnapper and murderer?

Try Ada: it makes Lolita look like Playschool. It also happens to be one of the most astonshingly brilliant novels I've ever read, but hey, the literature/porn distinction's just about class, right?

  • Field Theory: Beer and Loathing,

the urinals are fairly sick and seemed to be aimed at the beer-swilling jagermiester-shooting munter crowd ("those urinals are fuckin hot bro!") which is pretty much out of synch with the rest of the bar. I think they would do better to remove them and fairly soon.

The consequences of moving to Courtenay Place. The Malthouse seems somewhat stuck between being a place for serious beer-lovers and just another laddish pub.

  • Up Front: Young and Sort of Free,

What does one have to do to "accidentally" get pron on one's PC in NZ?

I'm told that it's not a good idea to do a Google image search for "manhole".
