  • Hard News: Why did Stephen die?,

There has long been a casual relationship between owning and particularly operating a motor vehicle, being youngish, out at night and not down in the daisies “yass Massah” compliant style that will get you intimidated, verbally and physically abused, threathend with pepper, Taser and nasty neck force holds.

Avoid the cops is my strategy if you want to see the morning light and be realatively injury free. If you cannot avoid them have plenty of cameras around and take class actions. Apart from finding lost trampers and cleaning up after gruesome care crashes they are a blight on society.

  • Speaker: Key: Concession Not Recession, in reply to Russell Brown,

ACC has been asked to reassess the bill in line with what Dexter says upthread, not disingenuousness just an early twenties person walking into one of the many traps for younger players. No written contract provided either Russell.

  • Speaker: Key: Concession Not Recession, in reply to Graham Reid,

I recognised your mild satire GR, once Dean Parker commented it all came back though. It is not cozy wozy, these industry people play hardball. And people might like to try and read this rebuttal.

A family member of mine has worked on the periphery of the film industry while a student in between breaks, and has been hit with a huge (for him) ACC bill as an independent contractor when he was clearly an employee. Thanks to ShonKey’s “Hobbit Enabling Act” and Cur Richard Taylor and Lord Jackson.

  • Speaker: Key: Concession Not Recession, in reply to Alec Morgan,

Link to Helen Kelly’s long response. The upshot is the government and Warners knew the dispute was settled and ‘boycott’ lifted prior to the Warner execs meeting in NZ. And I am happy to revisit this because it is a situation we will all be living with for a long time.

  • Speaker: Key: Concession Not Recession, in reply to BenWilson,

I’d say so too Ben. “It’s all in the grooves” or at least the thousands of PA “Hobbit” posts, that might make a fascinating copied volume (with the NZCTU’s post “Hobbit Enabling Act” revised timeline included) .

  • Capture: Cinema Scoped, in reply to Geoff Lealand,

Had the misfortune to live in ‘Dargahole’ by the big muddy for 6 or 7 months in 1969. Saturdays were the highlight of the week, off to the movies. A really long entrance foyer as I recall. Good luck to the new cinema.

Nearby Ruawai had an old fashioned comfortable “fleapit” nicely angled for jaffa rolling with mezzanine and foyer, saw “Giant” and a few classic westerns there. New releases seemed a luxury apart from school holidays.

Great to hear about all the new community and micro cinemas.

    Yes an excellent primer.

  • Legal Beagle: Kim Dotcom: We need an Inquiry!,

The various Police sections and Inspector General basically investigating themselves is fraught with potential crediblity issues and confilicts of interest as far as some of us mere citizens see it. Mr Key should be first on the list for an interview, he has let the country down and more revelations may well yet come.

One can imagine Ms Kitteridge seated in a leather armchair at GCSB HQ....
“do have another snifter Bec’s, now is it really necessary to go there? Good, knew you’d see it. Jolly good then, job and finish”.

  • Legal Beagle: Kim Dotcom and the GCSB,

The political angle is of interest too. When did the Prime Minister know, or more likely for backside covering purposes, not know! what the GCSB was up to. The legal detail will be vital in the end of course.

With Echelon and Waihopai etc there are squllions of bits and bobs transferred to the yanks no doubt quite smoothly but the NZ spooks still seem to have a public reputation as bunglers persisting from the “pie and Penthouse” lost briefcase to the punctured dome and now this. In movies black ops stay ‘on the bus’ so it is quite amazing that this has come to light at all. But I guess we should be thankful that such legal niceties can be taken reasonably seriously in our country.

Kiwis once marched in the streets opposing the SIS ammendment bill, but last year hardly a whimper apart from blogs as many government agencies acquired all sorts of major surveilling powers.

  • Hard News: "Because we can", in reply to Sofie Bribiesca,

Paula Bennett has acquired the most (around 15) derogative nicknames “Benefat, Pullya Benefit, Puller Benefit” etc. plus Sophie’s, for some years for any minister bar the ‘Prime Mincer’.

Can that dislike for the face of legislating away genuine support for vulnerable kiwis be turned into action? AAAP had a go today at Bennie HQ! And the rest of us should join in.

Beneficiaries of all kinds are not “others” they are kiwis, their kids are kiwi kids. What happened to “we take care of our own”? Would beneficiaries such as Nat. Super and WFF recipients like to be zapped like “prawns” in the movie “District 9” as Bennett and Rebstock seem intent on?
