  • Hard News: Friday Music: I like your old…, in reply to Simon Grigg,

That is interesting Simon, no wonder VU sales were low! Some few people used to get airfreight NMEs–post office order or overseas funds? Heh.

Still the Auckland Townhall was bulging at Lou’s two 70s shows if everyone who says they were there was. I was, and remember his TV interview where he expressed surprise at one un-named item freely available on our chemists shelves that was not in NY.

  • Hard News: Everybody's Machiavelli, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

You can be such a “tory distract” Craig.

Pallino unsurprisingly could not topple “Lenslider” and his crew has adopted the US practice of destabillisation after the election. Though it looks like they would dearly liked to have gone earlier.

Bullshit. No one lives on thin air. The money trail is always important.

  • Hard News: Everybody's Machiavelli,

Jeez there may be more to be revealed, our very own “Bonfire of the Vanities”.

Agree with others, drop “centre”. The Eastern suburbs lot try and play for keeps.

  • Hard News: When a riot went on,

Hard to fault account here by Russell. Auckland Metro did a couple of articles too if I recall correctly, one focused on the specifics of Dave Dobyn’s court case.

This riot was at the back of an ugly few years in NZ history, the fag end of the 70s, dawn raids, ’81 tour, pub clearouts and Muldoonist anti unionism got the cops engaged as they ever had been in their state forces role.

DD Smash–what a great name in context. Now about those first paragraph indents in Rip It Up...

  • Hard News: Thursday Music: Doing the Business, in reply to Kumara Republic,

Or, maybe flatscreens don’t look as spectacular as a CRT exploding in the carpark after trajectory from an upstairs room.

  • Hard News: Thursday Music: Doing the Business, in reply to Dean Papa,

She could take a cue from old dudes once put under the spotlight from time to time like Bob Dylan and Steely Dan–say anything, and leave ’em guessing.

  • Hard News: Thursday Music: Doing the Business, in reply to Simon Sjorn,

Not wrong Simon, hard putting the context/meaning thing on a youngster . Sure industry people signed off on Lorde as the initial commenter on your link says but so did someone on the various sexist rap swaggerers she may have got some of her imagery from.

“they did it too” is rarely a justification, but, but, many musicians have a bleat about the industry at some stage, Van Morrison being a major culprit, Pistols–“EMI”, Neil Young, Lou Reed–“Metal Machine Music”, from earlier days.

  • Hard News: Thursday Music: Doing the Business,

Audio Culture briefing at Auckland Library was great. What a rich seam of music knowledge amongst the attendees.

Simon and Murray have taken on a mammoth task. Waiting for my Uncle Murdoch Riley’s 60s Viking Record Label to appear on AC list! He’s been interviewed apparently. This project needs input from writers, and most importantly punters, (Rhumba Bar anyone...) contributing memorabilia like tickets and showbills.

  • Hard News: This time it's Syria,

US imperialism’s firepower is rarely a positive response to anything. The yanks have exacerbated many of the problems that persist in the mid East with their continued backing of Israel.

Syria seems awful from this distance as did the Balkans in the 90s. Barely comprehendable from a relatively cosy kiwi perspective. But there were serious shooting wars here too in Aotearoa, and in the land of the free USA. So you have to dig deeper as to what is really going on.
