    Not dirty then?
I am beginning to think this is just another ploy to attack "Lefties" as being mean, dirty, smelly, rent-a-crowd, bludging, lazy, useless and unkind to children.
    Little do they know....
We also eat babies and shout at people in wheelchairs.

    What am I looking at?….
Well, it appears that I am watching “Key TV”
Last night, on “Johnno & Ben” we were “treated” to Key Snr being “Pranked” by the dubious duo, bushwhacked as they say, did they have any questions to ask? No…
Then we were inspired by the crash test dummy that is Key Jnr in yet another “Prank” “Car Karaoke” where a selection of songs with the title “Forget You” but not his one, were played. He looked sullen, you could read the expression on his face “You’re supposed to be pushing my record”. When they, eventually, played the abominable bile that is Max’s masterpiece he came alive with the vociferous flamboyance of Marcel Marceau, that guy has talent for the radio, coffee making I would imagine.
On the subject of radio, Key Jnr. is playing records on George and no-one is allowed to speak ill of the boy. Meanwhile, Steffie is spread, literally, across the pages of our National Newshaper , what next? Bronagh Bakes Biscuits on 3?.
This begs the question. Is it possible that JK’s “Blind” trust is something to do with Oaktree Investments, does it have a hand in NZME? And why, oh why are we being constantly told to be kind to Key’s kids when that same media is telling us all they can about the children of the damned?.

I love it. Bastion point or Springbok tour? Carless days or think big?

    _Such_ good times.

Shame this is so hard to find on the TVNZ News site...
    Back In The Day

In my humble opinion, there is a fair amount of good stuff on broadcast TV. Don't get me wrong, the good stuff is probably less than 2% but that is enough for those that need less than 3 or 4 hours of tv a day, you just need a good way of recording it.
My solution is to use a dedicated lap top stuck away on a shelf set to run with the lid closed, I have 3 usb satellite tuners connected to a 900mm dish (as I am one of the 20% of viewers living outside the main centres I only have satellite tv. If you live in an area served by Terestrial broadcast then you have even more choice and can get HD tv too) and use NPVR as a back end. This is connected via HDMI to a 50' LG led tv and runs through the front end, Kodi, on the laptop. EPG and series recordings are far more flexible than any set top box I have seen, including the full bells and whistles Freeview box. At this point I am recording up five shows at the same time if I need to, unfortunately Four +1 is on a separate Mux as is Prime, if I used 4 tuners I could, in theory, record everything all the time but in reality to get that "good" 2% rarely uses 2.
Using a 4Tb drive means I haven't run out of recording space for almost a year so far and the drive is only about a third full.
Otherwise, there are "Friends in America" that share their VHS tapes with me ;-)

  • Hard News: So what now?,

Yet most of those people do not love the prospect of life in a sleepy village with few of their own culture.

I was in Kerikeri the other day, went to Bunnings, had some lunch looked at some boats for our next big adventure. On the way back we popped into Whangaroa harbour and had a beer or two, chatted with lots of interesting people.
The odd thing that I noticed was that only one or two of the people i spoke to were not English, a few years back that would not have been the case.
So, it seems quite a few do love the prospect of life in a "sleepy village" and they are not alone.

  • Hard News: So what now?, in reply to linger,

More accurately, arrivals disproportionately affect Auckland

Well yes. This is a matter of government policy, lack of influence in getting new immigrants to consider anything other than Auckland. We need more people in the provinces and this should be encouraged, the free for all attitude of the current Government helps no-one but the Auckland elite, bigger rents and property prices paid for by those thinking that all is hunky dory in Auckland. The fact is that the provinces would love the financial and entrepreneurial input of those that want to make a new start, not just the hopeful immigrants but, also, the dispossessed from war torn areas of the world that have fallen due to the over reaching influence of global traders and sectarian revolution.
We are a last bastion of freedom to some, ironic eh?.

Migration is a two way street.... hence Emigration and Immigration.
Brain Drain Emigration offsetting Immigration but not including natural population growth would surely mean more unless Immigration was really low numbers at the time.
I read from your statement that population flow in either direction was less because of more leaving...
My understanding is Population growth, whether natural or by immigration, was less because Emigrants exceeded Immigrants. So therefore greater net migration.
