Further to Ian's offerings, I thought Beatrix Potter might have been a rich source of literary otters, but the only one I remember is a passing reference to 'wicked otters' in The Tale of Mr Tod.

Well, Jeremy, I was on a flight recently with a whole horde of Miss Central America contestants (long story). Next to each other they look kind of normal, but compared to the rest of the human race they look extremely weird. OK, aliens may be a little strong, but still.

BTW - 'unreconstructed' means the opposite of 'enlightened' or 'progressive'. Apparently the term came from the American Civil War (Southerners who refused to accept Reconstruction after the war).

Ripper: Do you realize that fluoridation is the most monstrously conceived and dangerous Communist plot we have ever had to face? -
I didn't entirely agree with Raban's analysis, but it is, as always for him, well argued. He made quite an effort to get in among the Tea Party and fathom their mysterious ways.

this is an interesting analysis by Jonathan Raban in the Guardian. His take is that the American public have largely failed to grasp what the Obama administration have achieved so far, which is actually quite considerable - and that it is essentially Obama's fault for not articulating it clearly enough to them as he probably over-rates their ability to think like grown-ups.

I was sorry that The Scouring of the Shire got lost from the LOTR films - it was just hinted at with dark visions of enslaved hobbits. To my mind it's a much more satisfying end to the whole saga than that tedious sailing into the sunset. and the soggy story of Sam and Rosie. Pah.
