  • Speaker: Copyright Must Change,

At least National won't have to bother making good on their promises to build a better fibre infrastructure, there will be no point.

Note to National. Please stop listening to me.

  • Hard News: Effectively Friday,

Russell, thanks for you kind words. I love to be able to live up to them one day :-)

I guess I do feel we have had APRA and others in the room (for example, at Select Committee and an MED workshop) but never had any inkling that they recognised the many may issues with the simplistic POV they so manfully push. Unfortunately this seems to be the only one that has been reflected in legislation.

I appreciated Ant showing up on PA for a few hours but would have appreciated it even more if he had answered a couple of the straight forward questions that were asked of him. APRA might do a lot for local musicians, but they are not the only people doing that. Lots and lots of us are involved in the arts or supporting the arts one way or another. There is no exclusivity in that role.

Finally, whilst I am very concerned about NZ businesses being disadvantaged by this legislation the bit that really upsets me most is the vilification of our children for doing exactly what we all did when we were teenagers with no money. Copying songs we liked, paying when we could. The only difference I see between now and then is that it is easier to measure and track this behaviour today.

These days those children are called pirates and thieves. Compared with arms dealers and drug runners. Well, if they are going to be called that should we be surprised when they start living up to these labels, for real?

But rock cannot be both establishment and anti-establishment. It can’t be a rebellious underdog while endorsing and distributing the status quo.

I just knew this thread was going to be about copyright...

and both sides' reluctance to acknowledge goodwill in the other quite vexing.

Both sides? Hmm. You sure you are not trying to be a bit too "fair and balanced" there are you Russell?

As someone who relies on Copyright I see myself on the same side as artists, musicians and writers. I particularly like hearing from Islander who's use and understanding of existing law is very educational.

On the other hand, I have complete disdain for APRA and their attempt to use NZ as an example for the rest of the world to follow so that Sony, Disney and co. can dominate the new airways at the expense of NZ individuals and businesses.

The Guardian! Honestly, if we can't count on the last bastion of uptight leftism to be responsibly emotionally retarded, what's the world coming to?

It is strange. Their comments thread seems to have been hijacked by sock puppets for a long time. Just isn't worth the bother.

  • Speaker: Copyright Must Change,

There is no law yet, there's proposed law, and issues have already be raised and noted as per anthony's noting and addressing in his press statement.

You are wrong. Again. The law was passed last year. Sorry to be a "dick" about this but given the amount of times we have covered this topic I get the feeling you ignore everything that is being said and carry on in your own strange version of reality.

I don't normally get mad on PA but robbery makes me mad. Why? Because people with businesses affected by such an inane law keep telling him and others what the gross problems are and we keep getting ignored.

Right now we are working on a company policy for S92'x'.

I think it will be something along these lines..."We cannot accept liability for sites we host on behalf of our clients. We will therefore recommend that these are moved offshore, away from NZ's jurisdiction. This will cost our clients more money but at least it removes the liability and risk that has been placed on us. "

At least National won't have to bother making good on their promises to build a better fibre infrastructure, there will be no point.

Good for the NZ economy and business. No. But neither you nor MED seem to care.

Russell can ban me if he likes but I won't be retracting my previous statement about robbery's attitude.

I actually saw that sign outside a bar of dubious repute in South Carolina. I think it may have had "or ugly" in there as well.

Why do I always despair at the lack of scientific knowledge in our society. Science is not about proving black is white. Einstein's theory of relativity has been peer reviewed over the last few years by a vast body of his peers.

When will we get our heads out of the sands and face the facts. Relativity is real, relativity is measurable and if we don't do something about it relativity will happen - all to soon.

as in a some one accused of wrong behaviour in a licensed venue is biffed out without a court of law.

Don't be a total dick robbery. We are talking about perfectly legitimate businesses at risk being unable to operate without recourse to due legal process.

    This law is crap, 100%.

No such thing as free money.

    Oh, I wouldn't say that.

It's just that sometimes there is more free money and sometimes less. We are in the latter situation right now and there is frighteningly little we can do about it...

    In countries like France,

The economy and rules around doing business are *so* rigid it is surprising they even have an economy...

I suspect mechanisation rates between France and NZ are not so different but have no proof of that. They subsidise an inefficient rural sector which soaks up manual labour.
