  • Speaker: Copyright Must Change,

92a says isps should be open to playing a roll in making internet traffic lines safer and in compliance with present laws.

This is known simply as "making shit up". Come on robbery, you can do better than that.

  • Speaker: Copyright Must Change,

There is one major difference between peer to peer file sharing and home taping and that is the issue of the personal nature of mix tapes,/quote>

What? Your copying good, other copying bad?

<quote> as opposed to the impersonality of anonymous sharing, which is closely related to the scale of the whole thing. There is a massive order of magnitude difference of your kids making a copy of their favourite songs for their mates and getting online with strangers and anonymously trading copyright material.

I would even dispute this POV. I think that the 'one thing' that is different is that copying is far easier to measure these days. And now it is measurable the recording industry sees an opportunity to charge for it.

Just to add, I don't think everyone should or needs to follow down the free route for their copyrighted material. However, free licences rely just as much on copyright law as any other type of licence, including the default. What I am saying, as a constant participant in the 'Copyright Industry' is that these *changes* to the law are unnecessary, unfair and backward.

  • Speaker: Copyright Must Change,

it's pretty easy to lobby for free media when its not your media and you have nothing to lose,

So, let me just address this issue, because it takes us full circle to a debate we had about DRM/TPM a long time ago.

Ever since I was 18 I have been producing reams and reams of Copyright material. Every.single.working.day.

I stopped that in about 2000. I now have part ownership of a company where dozens of developers continue to do the same Copyright creation for our clients and our own behalf. We release the stuff we control into the public domain under a permissive licence (GPL).

I have a huge and significant interest in Copyright. I think I have earned the right to lobby and talk about free media, thanks.

When this debate kicked off I tried to demonstrate to robbery and other how 'free' models can and do work for Copyright holders in many many different endeavours.

I don't claim it is easy or that you don't need to plan and think through what it takes to be successful. I will say that there are many people who do have something to lose, who are now lobbying because the models that they were brave enough to embrace and accept are being threatened by legislation that belongs to corporate dictatorships.

and just for the record, I am getting over my technical deficiencies by simply declaring my avatar the 'new black'.

I walk into a record store and pelt the owner with rocks instead?

I'm pretty sure black Jesus would have something to say about that.

as you may have noticed I’m no public speaker and was a little blown away by the other participants

No, I didn't notice that. Your point about the state of NZ agriculture was very well made. Still voted against you :-)

Then again, everyone was blown away by Rod Oram. His own team (who were not exactly terrible) looked pale shadows against his shining light.

Somehow, i think getting ISPs to shut off the internet for a day would be more effective.

Yes it would. But we are not as irresponsible as the truck owning companies.

S92 - I know more is coming. But we have been told all along by MED that a code of practice will be agreed between ISPs and the recording industry and that this is an important part of how the legislation will be applied in practice. Now it looks like there will be no CoP agreed to by RIANZ.

So, are we left was an ass?

And, is anyone else thinking maybe MED need to be held to account?

Still the orange microphone to me

Oh, I thought that was his chin...

Foo, great. Many many thanks to the organisers. My only problem was that I was (on Friday at least) a bit too frazzled/late to communicate. Met some of the PA writers I had not met before and was barely able to string a sentence together.

Also got to meet kotare, a blogger I have admired for some time.

There will be a massive dairy cleanup project to make our agri-business genuinely clean and green. Jobs. Exports. Rivers you can swim in.

That's the one I would go for. Did you get a reply from Federated Farmers?
