  • Cracker: Gimme Shelter,

I wonder if it was a different security company than usual... they seemed to be a bit more stroppy than in previous years. I also received a shove in the chest when accidentally walking the wrong way into an exit lane. Unnecessary. When you're a 120kg security guard, you can afford to ask someone to go the other way - I'm hardly going to put up a fight.

  • Cracker: Jobs Blows,

I'm planning on getting an HTC Wildfire next payday... Google Maps looks very handy, and doing the odd bit of email and browsing until data gets a lot cheaper. Anyone used one of these?

You'll notice that google have deactivated turn-by-turn navigation in NZ (you can still get directions using google maps though). If you want to enable the navigation, there is a hacked version of google maps which works very well. I've been using a HTC Desire as my in-car navigation/mp3/hands free phone/distraction in NZ and oz for the past few months and it is fantastic.

I think the lust will remain unrequited.

aah, gadget lust. i love it. i figured out how to get offline GPS topo maps on my phone last weekend, and then show my running route into a 3D google earth fly-through. You know, cos that's really useful.

    Talking of Android-based devices...
Ben Austin, please tell me, are you pleased with your HTC Desire? And also: how do you think it compares to the HTC Legend?

FWIW, I like my htc desire. It works well and does lots of cool stuff. I've never owned an iphone so I can't offer a comparison, but I gather that it's pretty much a geekier version of an iphone 4.

I got mine from clove.co.uk for about $750ish but check geekzone for the latest updates on where to get it at the best price. I hear that Vodafone NZ aren't bringing it into NZ til Christmas

  • Hard News: iPad Impressions,

I'll ask -- we'll talk to one of their people on the show this week.

But a website is a cost centre, both to build and maintain, and it's
hard for a monthly magazine to maintain the kind of traffic that would make advertising a viable source of income.
The iPad app is a front-end for $6.49 purchases of the digital version
of the magazine, which is mostly generated straight out of their
production system, so in theory it wouldn't have to be more than a
    modest success to make money.

Now that I think about it, there wouldn't be much point in an android
app until there are enough android tablets out there. I wouldn't be
willing to shell out $6.49 to read a magazine on a phone.

Do you know if north and south are planning to make an app for android? Or, you know, a website?
