Ahhhh, basking in the Pterry love...
I'm slowly collecting the full set via Wellington's second-hand book shops,

I really only enjoyed the tv versions of the books because they reminded me of certain parts of the book - they made me smile with the memory of reading the books, rather than because they were good or funny or accurate representations of the book I had read. Not a glowing recommendation, obviously.
In the catalogue of re-reads, Pterry's and Neil Gaiman's Good Omens is my all-time favourite. Once a year, at least. Pure bliss...

It's such a different situation for women though - at least in my little queer world. My friends and I just assume that every female athlete (from my partner's football team to the top athletes) is gay, until they say otherwise. And in my partner's footie team, the dykes do dominate (so to speak). If any poor homophobe tried to join, she'd learn pretty quickly that she was in a minority of one - and that she was in the wrong, not the queers.
But for guys? I have heard the rumours about certain top sportsmen, but it's pretty rare for there to be an really easy acceptance of gay men in sports. Except for in the Gay Games or the Outgames, of course, which is a whole 'nother kit 'n' caboodle.

Bridget Williams Books is trying to encouraging people to sponsor books into Tuhoe marae. There are order forms, but the easiest way is to send a cheque for the RRP ($79.99) to BWB, PO Box 12474, Wellington. Attach a note saying "For Encircled Lands marae copy" or something. We're hoping to get one copy to each marae in the area.

not all editors are as careful readers as we might wish they were
Then they are not competent editors. The good ones are meticulous readers, who read a wide range of books (for pleasure, not just for work). The excellent ones have (as well as their skills with language) some knowledge of the topic they are editing, and may have read other books on the same topic or by that author. This improves the chance of their picking up on changes of voice or tone, or echos of another writer. Or it leads them to ask: "Why hasn't the author cited X as a source - s/he's a leading NZ author on this topic. Did the author use that text at all?".
And if the editor or publisher doesn't raise those questions, then they haven't done their job.

Do you mean that The L Word has realistic sex scenes? Not in my queer world. It may be a little more realistic than some shows, but it's still essentially Emma's "one attractive woman and one attractive [wo]man, aged between twenty and forty". It's so sanitised and well-manicured - doesn't sound like any lesbian sex I've ever (ahem) seen.
But, yes, many thanks to Outrageous Fortune for bringing real sex (and swearing) to the screen!

Well, I'm glad you did! I've had "stinky poo, stinky poo, knickers, knickers, knickers" in my head for the past few weeks, for some reason, and now it has been laid to rest.

Agreed. Maria Pia's gets my vote for one of the best restaurants in Wellington. If only I could afford to go more often!
