  • Up Front: The Up Front Guides: How to Be…, in reply to Craig Ranapia,

Crikey, Craig. There are so many 'urges' in paragraph three (and throughout the whole article) that it's almost satirical.

  • Hard News: I'm not a "f***ing cyclist".…, in reply to Carol Stewart,

I know a guy who does a lot of fairly long-distance road cycling. He recently got wing mirrors and said it made him realise that most drivers actually are considerate and patient. And now he can see them lining up behind him, waiting for a good place to pass. It sounded like it helped him to be more considerate of those in cars, too.

  • Up Front: Staying Civil,

    OT, sorry, but:

As has been proven in these parts, I am nobody's lady.

reminds me of a gorgeous poem by Pat Parker, which ends with:

"My lady is definitely no lady
    which is fine with me,

    cause I aint no gentleman."

  • Up Front: Staying Civil,

Also, perhaps crafty Wellingtonians are the best people to ask: who makes civil union cards? Somebody must, surely.

oh, and me! I'd suggest some of the lovely, hand-made cards from felt.co.nz:

  • Up Front: Staying Civil,

We've both been known to use the term "my woman" (often followed by a neanderthal grunt). But the language/politics of ownership don't come into play in the same way they would if a man referred to his female partner that way.

  • Up Front: Staying Civil,

Oddly now I think about it, if I were civily unified to a woman, I think I'd be a lot more likely to call her my wife than I am my current partner my husband. That's... odd.

Yup. That's how I feel about it (not that I'm about to marry/CU anyone, certainly not my girlfriend/partner/consort/ladyfriend). A female-female couple using the term 'wife' is still slightly radical.

  • Up Front: Staying Civil,

And yet many of my friends who have had civil unions do choose to use the term 'wife', even though they can't legally get married. In my social circle, the terms 'wife' is no longer related solely to getting married, but also to the legal contract of the civil union.

And it can be handy, as it immediately makes it clear that your partner is also female, avoiding many of those awkward moments when people try not to trip over a personal pronoun: "Your partner, is he/she/they ..."

  • Speaker: My First Job,

    Pubic Address

National Archives printed a brochure a few years ago that claimed they were the "keepers of the pubic record". Now that would be a gripping read...

  • Up Front: Eat Up Your Brothelly,

Not sure of the relevance, but there were times (fairly recently. in the scheme of things) when doctors digitally massaged women to treat hysteria... and I'm sure the clients paid a fee. So, if we consider sexual release or contact as a postive, healthy, (even necessary) part of being human, then delivery of such a service seems perfectly acceptable to me.

  • Southerly: Everybody Needs Good Neighbours,

forgot to turn off their alarm clock before going on holiday ...

One night, a security alarm in our neighbourhood went off at around midnight - it turned out that the tenants were away for two weeks. The alarm company weren't interested, noise control couldn't enter the property without permission and the police had better things to do with their time.

After a few hours, it stopped. But of course, it happened again a few nights later.

This house was over the road on a back section - so quite a distance from our place. I can't imagine how loud it would have been for the houses on either side of it.

The third time, a kindly neighbour disconnected the alarm somehow. I don't care if it involved a 2x4, breaking and entering, or a small bomb. They were the best neighbour EVER.
