Yes, Dick Hubbard may be socially conservative, but he's prepared to look past his own background and beliefs. After his gaff with the letter he co-signed on the Civil Unions issue in 2004, he accepted an invitation to visit The Big Gay Out, where he spent a lot of time with a group of gay and lesbian parents. He also accepted an invitation to visit them again during one of their regular playgroup sessions. The Mayor also hosted the celebration marking the 20th anniversary of Homosexual Law Reform last year, held in the Town Hall, and he's attended a few of the partnership meetings with GLBT community groups.
Having dealth with the previous Mayor and this one, I know who I'd put my money on as a genuine bridge-builder!!

the precipitating books were a noxious series of seven books called The Rainbow Fairies. Six and seven year old girls love them.
Yep, my twin god-daughters are very fond of these too. When they were born, their sensible, liberal modern parents announced that O & I would be bought up free of sexual stereotyping, unencumbered by traditional gender roles. As soon as they were old enough to express an opinion, their choice of clothing/toys/decor was FAIRY PRINCESS PINK all the way.
Fortunately they are now going through the Pony Club phase; the obsession being so great they almost think they are horses themselves. The good part of this is that horses eat lots of apples and carrots and stuff, so their vegetable intake has increased exponetially!!

Watching the commentary on TV this morning, and the discussion about how the challenge could happen in two rather than four years.... someone said that Team NZ will now have to go away and design and build a new boat - WHY?? for focks sake!
They've already got a perfectly good, usable boat that cost squillions.... wasn't the loss caused by a variety of 'external' factors. i.e wind speed and conditions, sailsmanship (??), and the loss of that sail??

Something I noticed when I moved to NZ was the lack of sailing that goes on (at least compared to the amount of available sea).
I've always felt a certain 'bah humbug' about the whole Auckland, City of Sails thing. I've never been on a yacht in my 45 years living in Auckland, despite working for two years at the RNZYS, and only two of my friends and colleagues are sailors. There may be a lot of yachts down at Westhaven and the other marinas, but is there really a disproportionately high number of yachts per capita?

Oh the pleasures of having a friend in high places!
There seem to be a lot of Americans who speak of The President (whoever it may be at the time) in the same awed, reverent tones as many of us speak of God/Jesus/Allah/The Pope...... and seem to think that elevation to that high office also infers infallability.
If only........
