  • Hard News: On receipt of a not-so-nastygram,

Hmmm, thirty or so years ago, school holiday with my grandparents in Papatoetoe... Grandma and I sharing our piles of library books as we so often did. I picked up a sci-fi novel from her pile, and got engrossed... particularly as it developed in to the sort of torrid lite-porn that can get a grip on a teenage boy's brain. The hero of said novel had worked out the key to time-travel, and ended up meeting himself, sometimes in multiples.... and ended up engaging in <ahem> some steamy self-love.

Not the sort of literature I expected either the Papatoetoe Public Library or my Grandmother to stock.....

< I think I prefered the pagan gods - they only fucked with famous people's lives. >

As well as fucking swans, bulls, siblings, parents and all manner of perverted stuff..... the Greek and Roman gods were certainly unhindered by morals or convention when it came to having a good time!

  • Hard News: No Friends of Science,

<I find it funny that not one expert has mentioned or raised the thought that land masses are moving. >

Oh ok, so the story in yesterday's Herald about British Airways using maps that place Stansted Airport 64km out of position in a village that shares its name is actually incorrect. The entire British Isles are moving - just think, my grand children might be able to visit London in the Bay of Islands one day!!

<Something I forgot to say in the blog today is that I found out about the project because I had the idea of trying to stage a screening at a Great Blend>

As long as we can all turn up in whatever we were wearing when we first saw this great piece of cinema!!

  • Hard News: Some Politics,

The Liquor King site on Ponsonby Rd may have cost $7 million, but the business will continue to operate until the current lease expires in July 2009. In the meantime Council's income from the lease helps off-set the purchase price - I can't recall how by much, but it's a pretty significant amount.

  • Island Life: Browned to perfection,

But how accurate are those 'country of origin' figures for indicating the persons ethnicity anyway?

I regularly attend the citizenship ceremonies at the Ak Town Hall, and we get a lot of 'British' people in particular, who are black Zimbabweans, Hong Kong Chinese, mixed-race South African etc - but who have a British passport, and have often spent some time living in other countries on the way here, often gathering partners and children of yet another ethnicity on the way.

We're not a melting pot having unadulterated brown/yellow/white/black mixed up here; that has already happened many times over in hundreds of other countries around the world. They've all come here because they value NZ and what it has to offer, and we've accepted them because of the learning, skills, trades, wealth and so forth that they may have to offer us.

  • Hard News: You can't moan,

    Hi Nais
The Western Bays Community Board has decided to set up a working party to make a submission, and yes Councillors Hucker and Sefuiva - and the Mayor, were present when we discussed it... and I believe most other Community Boards will be doing the same, and encouraging members to make their own submissions.

We try to live by what we preach, and so Election hoardings are subject to a triennial review, and that was last done in June 06. Each Community Board gets to review the list of hoarding sites in their own ward and decide if there should be more, less, or none at all. I don't think any of the Boards, this term or last, made any changes. Every election we have a debate over the effectiveness of hoardings... I'd love to give up on them and get two months of weekends back instead of erecting and repairing them, but I think the Left does them because the Right does them because...

Ike Finau's signs?!?! Well, some argued that free speech shouldn't be constrained by the same rules that govern the advertising of beer and cars... I'm just glad I wasn't involved in that debate.

Yep, it would be great if businesses actually put up a nice clear street number to save all that pesky slowing down in heavy traffic trying to locate one amongst all the clutter of signs with everything but. Currently the multitude of signs in most of our shopping strips resembles the late-night noise in a crowded bar – there are so many voices raised over one another it is difficult to actually focus on what is important to you.

The billboards themselves may be located on private property but the whole point of them is that they can be seen by as many people as possible in public places - the streets, parks, shopping precincts etc. One of the benefits of the review is that we all now get a chance to say if that is a good or bad thing - or if we'd prefer to enjoy our cityscape without Coca Cola and Vodafone pushing their consumer goods at us. So, write a submission!
