  • Island Life: Good luck, Jim.,

Does this explain the curious way in which John Key appears to give differing messages to different audiences? Must be very hard unless you are a 2nd hand car salesman.

A really clever writer can capture even simple things and create a clear tangible image. I think that you David (and Bob) do give us that clear tangible image with humour. I have passed your writings on to to my sister and her husband for them to enjoy. Your words deserve a wider audience.Thanks.

The Katherine Mansfield Short Story Comp

**REPLY:** Thanks for the pointer, Ian! I am aware of the KM awards (I'm even a fan of KM herself, as well as a number of the previous winners). What I was trying to say is that I suspect my unsophisticated prose style -- emphasizing entertainment rather than art -- wouldn't be suitable entry material. One thinks of pork chops at a Bar Mitzvah. But it was a very kind suggestion on your part! -- Cheers, DH.

  • Southerly: My First Stabbing,

The Katherine Mansfield Short Story Comp is an Annual NZ affair.
By the way James Thurber (American Humorist from the 30's and 40's + ) would have enjoyed your humour too.

  • Southerly: My First Stabbing,

You held my attention right to the last word and left me thinking on. Great! Have you considered entering the Katherine Mansfield short story Competition. You should!

Craig: Funny to hear you spending so much energy shooting the messenger and so little on debating the possibility that the vacuous nature of John Key's image should be considered.
Some interesting stuff thankyou Finlay, and not really tongue in cheek.

Good stuff Keith. Great to think that there is a journalist who doesn't insult my intelligence as TV reporters seem to do.

  • Hard News: All this and more,

I have watched and been absorbed by the video "My Language" and been blown away. Given that she was writing her own explanation of her thinking, it would suggest an extraordinary wealth of ideas which are presumably locked up in many autistic people. How frustrating! Do autistic people hear the language of others around them? Thanks.

My response to your blog is of sadness and wonder and maybe optimism. but the Russians could not "capture" Afghanistan. Who can or would want to? Some medals were stolen from the Army museum in NZ and this is a "shocking" event. Put in the context of life in Afghanistan the mind struggles. Thanks for the commentary Damian.
