  • Hard News: Moving from frustration to disgust, in reply to tim kong,

I think the heartfelt plight of the teacher speeches are to some degree irrelevant in this discussion. There are many people in this country who work damn hard, in their professions for the same or less money - and they should be no less valued. By all of us.

You miss the point - the plight of teachers and how they are and of late have been treated is not irrelevant by any means.

On the matter of schooling - The most important thing you can be schooled in is how to learn, to be able to teach yourself.

My daughter Geena "Real Life" as one of her presents for her second birthday - it was a three disc collectable released to coincide with the American Tour - two of the discs having extended versions. She would make us play “Let it be love” and “See the Lights” over and over whilst she would tap/slap out the beat – they are great.

. I think the Hare Krishnas are cool: invariably friendly and calm.

A great thing to witness is the Hare Krishna men going on waht I call the misogynist power march, chanting with the women and children following a dutiful number of paces behind - part of a divine order of which I want no part.

The chant to my ears is an abomination.

  • Hard News: Drunk Town, in reply to chris,

I wonder if trouser confiscation could bring about a similar result at a lesser cost.

One night working in town - there was a trouser less guy so off his face he was sitting in a Queen Street bus stop masturbating.

I am not sure it would have the "desired" outcome.

The Key approach Pure Genius or Pure Bullshit or just spite.

To teach well requires a commitment to your vocation which many people do not understand and that includes politicians.

The latest OECD report ranked NZ Fourth out of 32 countries surveyed for educational outcomes in Literacy, Science and Maths and as regards resource provided for education NZ was ranked approx 23rd out of 32 countries.

So for the dollars spent/resources applied NZ is getting an excellent result.

It is interesting that the countries ranking above NZ had achieved better results by lifting the educational performance of the tail enders through concentrating resources in the teaching of technologies.

As regards the resourcing of education – I note my father a teacher from the 1950s through to the mid 1990s and to adequately resource his classes had to collect his own materials as regards paper, cardboard and other art stuffs and aids – he used to visit printers and get misprints of packaging and use the undersides and also go through the Jumbo bins in light industrial areas collecting useful material for school. This was necessary regardless of whichever party was in government.

Teaching is one of the only professions where those working in it have to reach into their own pocket and/or organise fund raising to get the things they need.

The present thrust of National’s education policy can’t help but be seen as spiteful – in that the Nats view education in a partisan way – and all of “this” is perhaps their method of dealing to what they may perhaps regard as a “pool’ of Labour voters.

The problem is not enough socialism for the rich, and not enough free market for the poor.

One can call it many things though socialism is not one - there is a need to make a comprehensive list - welfare, income tax reform, corporate welfare, hand outs - kindly add more.
