  • Hard News: Rodney's Folly,

Tom & Rich, I would continue to point out the people like you are *always* going to be disappointed in Labour governments. Labour have always had broader base and pragmatic approach (aka betrayal) than your narrow definition of what is good.

You are also buying into the sub-text which is to alienate the support base of Labour. All you need are excuses not to vote Labour and they are being feed to you on a shovel. Worked in NZ and definitely working in the UK.

I remember the last time they went into opposition to "reflect" and get back to their roots. It was a long journey.

  • Hard News: Rodney's Folly,

Having said that, the sooner the Blairite Labour party is kicked out of power the better. They've betrayed every tradition the British Labour Party ever had

I think the long period of investment in health, education, children and much of the public sector belies that statement. Nice for the left to have reasons to not vote Labour but don't pretend it is because of some sort of false betrayal of values. That in itself is a betrayal.

  • Hard News: Rodney's Folly,

I think it is worth on this thread pointing out that the idea of having a referendum on just about every council decision is not democratic, it is dictatorial.

We elect people to represent us. For a period, we trust them to investigate, take advice and make decisions. Other methods are simply dictatorship by the [voting] majority.

I don't intend to take seriously in this or any other lifetime

Craig, maybe you should. Off topic I know, but the UK has just elected two fascist twerps to the EU parliament, and that is not an over blown description.

Let's face it, as far as the hairy-legged lesbians in the Labour Party are concerned, it's a crime to be male. You're no longer safe in your own home.

That was certainly the line by certain oily flail for a number of years over the "unfair" treatment of Dover Samuels. Now it seems those same femis were too lenient.

  • Island Life: The resignation of Captain Worth,

Slater was introduced there as a national party spokesman,

Presumably nobody from National wanted to touch this with a barge pole. At least, I hope that is the case, because CS as a regular party spokesman is a train wreck of monumental proportions in the making.

Another note to National spokespeople types, making this Labour's fault is bizarre and really really won't play out well.

  • OnPoint: Budget 2009: “Aww, shit.”…,

By the way, in all this, the one argument that is offensive is that Cullen spent all our money so there is nothing left...

The money "spent" means that our national debt is incredibly low, in fact, Don Brash argued vehemently it was too low not so long ago. It also means that we have something in the kitty to pay *our* pensions.

I would like Guyon Espiner to answer a question or two about whether he considers Cullen was justified in getting a little antsi at him a while back over the persistent tax cut questions. Cullen said they were unaffordable and folks that kept demanding them were greedy. Turns out he was right.

All the real work is done by the reduced operating allowance. It's impact will be felt more and more as time goes on.

Which is why, as a country we have to ween ourselves off an unnecessary addiction to Microsoft products. $100s millions being siphoned for for no good reason and yes, that compounds.

I thought this was an excellent interview on the issue:

On a slightly different tack, I heard John Key speak on Tuesday evening and I have to say, I was somewhat reassured. On the budget he talked about the need to keep spending enough but not piss of the credit rating agencies. On foreign policy he was excellent. Now that Obama is da man, we can be anti-nuke and pro-Am at the same time.

This was side a JK I had not seen in public and it was good.
