  • Hard News: A Work of Advocacy, in reply to HORansome,

Morse appears as an interviewer in the documentary in so far as the documentarian’s film her “interviewing” people outside of court. It’s not as if she is an interviewer for the documentary but rather that as a part of her activism she interviews people and the documentarians capture that.

That’s either a distinction without a difference, or one that should have been made a lot more clearly.

What is problematic is the allegation that the police used disinformation

As far as I can tell, it’s a little more than that – they’re also accusing media outlets of knowingly disseminating said “misinformation” (or “lies” in English) to preserve their access to Police sources. Russell: Please correct me if that’s an unfair or inaccurate statement of the film, but that's going a damn sight further than saying the MSM are partial or just got shit wrong.

  • Hard News: A Work of Advocacy,

(Morse, remarkably, is an interviewer as well as interviewee in the film)

What. The. Frak. I'd quite like you to ask Errol Wright and Abi King-Jones if they had any second thoughts about blurring the line between subject and film-maker like that. "Advocacy" has its place in documentary film-making, but when you're quite happily accusing others of having a moral compass without a needle, it might help to be scrupulous about your own.

  • Hard News: The file-sharing bill, in reply to Sacha,

Just gets better. Pagani posts a response at his own blog titled “Does replying to trolls only encourage them?”.

Well, John, until a few short weeks ago (apparently) you were a senior advisor to the leader of the Opposition in our House of Representatives -- and I presume you weren't working pro bono or getting paid by the Labour Party.

When any critique of our elected representatives is dismissed as "trolling", the term is meaningless and someone needs a long spell on the political naughty step until they get their heads around the concept of representative democracy.

  • Muse: Monday Linky Love (With Added Geekery),

the first episode reduction of the Dothraki from "complex culture" to "Semi-Naked Savage Brown Rape-y Type People" was, erm, problematic

I'm sorry to tell you this, but Westeros and Environs is full of "rape-y type people" - and I think it's to Martin's credit that he neither romantic or evasive about how ugly a working patriarchy can be for the women who are traded like sides of beef. No matter how you cut it, Viserys pretty much sells his 14 year-old sister for an army. And (**SPOILERS SWEETIE!**) well down the line when Sansia Stark is forced to marry Tyrion Lannister (which neither of them want) what's his great kindness? He doesn't "force consummation" (i.e. rape her) on the wedding night, and is mocked for his troubles.

  • Muse: Hey Greg O'Connor, Krup You!, in reply to Kumara Republic,

    And what’s next? A Clear Channel-esque “don’t play” list?

That's just bizarre -- but to be fair to Clear, it wasn't the only, or the worse, case of media over-sensitivity following the 9/11 attacks. And, IIRC, it was pretty much ignored. IWhat wasn't ignored by the BBC was Split Enz's "provocative" Six Months in a Leaky Boat being "discouraged from airplay" during the Falklands.

When I was a young boy
I wanted to sail around the world
That's the life for me, living on the sea
Spirit of a sailor, circumnavigates the globe
The lust of a pioneer, will acknowledge
    No frontier
I remember you by, thunderclap in the sky
    Lightning flash, tempers flare,
'round the horn if you dare
I just spent six months in a leaky boat
    Lucky just to keep afloat

    Aotearoa, rugged individual
    Glisten like a pearl
At the bottom of the world
    The tyranny of distance
    Didn't stop the cavalier
So why should it stop me
    I'll conquer and stay free
    Ah c'mon all you lads
    Let's forget and forgive
    There's a world to explore
Tales to tell back on shore
I just spent six months in a leaky boat
Six months in a leaky boat.

If you can find a political syllable in the above, I want what you're taking. :)

  • Muse: Hey Greg O'Connor, Krup You!, in reply to Heather Gaye,

Surely the point is that “writers and singers of songs like this” do think “don’t call the cops, f*** the police” about their shattered loved ones, and many have good reason.

Indeed - and I lived in a flat that got broken into three times. The only reason we bothered calling the Police the third time was for insurance purposes.

I've only seen The Hunter -- but it's a really lovely piece of work. The art is crisp and captures the tone of the book neatly, and the adaptation is faithful without being ritualistically inert.

Also, how fraking cool is it that all the Parker books are being brought back into print by the University of Chicago Press. Almost finished Butcher's Moon -- which is particularly welcome. This was the sixteenth Parker novel, and after it was published in 1974 (and never reprinted, AFAIK) Donald Westlake "rested" the character for almost twenty five years.

  • Hard News: The file-sharing bill, in reply to Russell Brown,

To be fair, Curran has already said she’d recommend a repeal bill to her caucus if the government enacts the termination provisions.

And I’m sure we’ll all be eagerly awaiting a clear, unambiguous statement of policy from Labour’s communications and IT spokeswoman before the election. Won’t we?

BTW, Russell, I do agree with you that this act is quite bad enough without the Orwellian hyperbole but believe me making a "recommendation" to caucus is a very long way from a solid policy commitment. And Curran knows it.

  • Hard News: The file-sharing bill, in reply to Phil Lyth,

Lianne Dalziel has blogged on copyright and the use of urgency, including Curran’s role.

FFS, nobody I’d take at all seriously is saying Labour should engage in knee-jerk opposition for the sake of it and not even David Farrar and Grant Robertson (who’ve done an excellent bipartisan attack on abuse of urgency) are saying extending sitting hours so the House can sit on Wednesday are a “constitutional outrage”.

But where the hell was the public interest in passing the Copyright Bill under any form of urgency, really? I’ve pretty much given up calling Labour out on its tendency to say “this sucks” to sector groups (GST increase, earthquake legislation etc.), but voting for it’s passage and/or adding insult to injury by getting rather coy about committing to repeal. Can’t have it both ways, sweeties.

I know neither Labour nor National seem interested, but how about taking a fucking stand on something -- anything -- and sticking to it?

    Um, no?

Good to know, I think. I still struggling to see who exactly the TPPA is supposed to benefit though...
