  • Field Theory: An important message for…, in reply to Tim Michie,

I contine to believe that as Sky absorbed male sports TVNZ needed something to programme and netball became free to air.

heh... I've just spent the last 4 days hammering out (errr I mean, finely crafting) a conference paper on aspects of carnival in the tv coverage of the 2007 Netball World Champs in Akld... My head is positively overflowing with netball/media info and now that the paper is done, it can spill out.... ;)

Back in the 1980s, TVNZ had a contracted sporting stable - the 'Big 4' - which included netball. Enter SkyTV in 1990, and one by one rugby league, cricket and rugby all took the money and ran... Netball was the only major sport left on TVNZ after that, but it too went to Sky in 2007/8 when the ANZ championship started up.

Netball test matches between NZ and Aus rank extremely highly on tv, have done for years. Helps that they're on TVNZ...

yeah well... 3 adults in the house, all baristas. Gotta focus on the important stuff in life (and feed the delicious addiction)

  • Hard News: Because it's about time we…,

wow... one of my favourite rant subjects (espresso & coffee snobbery) and I'm exhausted by the time I'm done reading the whole ten pages of comments ;p

    some quick notes before sleep:
went tripping round the globe last year, never stepped foot in a Starbucks while in the US. I was quite proud of that as the bloody things were everywhere.
London... saw some crimes against coffee while there (another day perhaps)
Costas.... their flat white was disappoint. agree with the earlier comment that it looked kinda ok (large cup tho) but tasted weak and bland
Monmouth (Borough Market) found while wandering and remembered it was on my Kiwi friend's 'recommended' list. eureka. worth the wait.

Chch.... I only recommend C4HQ (now on Tuam St). Friendly personal service, locally roasted beans. I buy a kg of C4 Stout beans every week, as the only other place I drink espresso is the very non-public establishment of my place with my trusty 2group La San Marco.

I'm a barista (years of experience, cafes & mobile) and total coffee snob, I freely admit it. In fact the only good thing to come out of the recent seismic down here may well be the opportunity to properly plumb in our beasty into a brand new kitchen. At the moment it lives in the garage but one day it will take pride of place.
    one day, my preciousssssss

  • Hard News: Holiday Open Thread 1: Beach…,

break time is almost over.... not that we went anywhere! Boxing Day was interesting, with in-laws and aftershocks arriving simultaneously. Not the best way to spend a day but never mind, we made it to the end of the visit & the shaking relatively unscathed.
Next week sees both research and the hounding of a certain insurance company resume with gusto :)

  • Up Front: Lessons from Nature,

In the first few days I was so busy telling my out-of-town friends that it wasn't so bad; now I want to say, "Far out, it is bad! Bring back the sympathy and attention! We need it after all!"

    I'm hearing ya Lilith...

the hardest times to deal with were actually about three months afterwards.

that's probably going to be true for us too Heather... although hopefully I won't be still waiting for EQC to show up by that stage.

It's the horrible state of limbo that doesn't help. Will my house be fixable or should I be planning to build anew? And how hard is it going to be to find tradeys in Chch over the next year or so?!

I'm still waiting for my brain to kick back into gear. Deadlines are crashing around my ears at an alarming rate... and sure, everyone's being really supportive but that's only going to last so long. The aftershocks and the after-effects will be going on for longer than any of us probably imagined 2 and a bit weeks ago.

  • Southerly: Refugee Status,

You too? Suddenly Riccarton is inner-city. It's like some kind of afterlife out here - or Mangere Bridge in 1997. Apparently the previous occupant ran a knocking-shop on these premises, and was evicted for her enterprise. Which meant I got to move in (after a repaint, natch). It's an ill wind & all.

lol you too? a friend moved into a new place recently that also used to be a knocking shop, although I think that one was legal. He's had a few blokes turn up looking for the previous occupants.

and yeah... the unexpected change in suburb will take some getting used to. it's weird over here. (no offense to any uberlocals)

  • Southerly: Refugee Status,

bummer.... no internet access for 3 days while shifting meant I missed the change in venue.
never fear, I had a drink for y'all at home later that evening :D

so now I'm another year older and rather suddenly living in a random suburb with a distinct lack of vowels. It's.... interesting.... that's all I'm saying until next time we meet with glass in hand.
