Thanks, Heather. I got what you meant. no probs. That means you must be at least one more rung up the nerd ladder than me!

  • Current Status: Holidays,

You sound a box of birds, rob... get anything good for xmas?

Uncertain times - well, I've heard Bollard say we're moving out of recession and English say we're moving into it, Some say China's crashing but I also read somewhere they still expect to be 5th fastest growing economy, so I guess you can take your pick.

I was surprised we even made it to the 21st century. :-)

Didn't celebrate or mark the new year myself - usually at least have a bonfire and music to farewell the old year. And write down all my mistakes and crap decisions and burn them. very cleansing. Nothing I needed to burn, tho, so that had to be good!

  • Hard News: The Interesting Party,

What link text? I just copied the url - should I have put "|" after it and just made something up or copied any old text from the page?

Far out, sorry to be so thick - I've made it work before, it's just eluding me. And as for getting a youtube vid to embed - double duh! I wanted Annie Lennox & Al Green singing "Put a little love in your heart" as my new year's day song offering....christ, I'll never be a nerd. Distinct disadvantage round here.

  • Current Status: Holidays,

What a lovely phrase Kerry. I admire your positivity.

Why thank you, kind sir. I look forward to more of your well-measured and erudite postings from Sydney this year. :-)

That probably sums up the current state of humanity.

Quite so. The Powerful Ones just need to remember their humanity. And quit worshipping Mammon to the exclusion of all else.

  • Up Front: First Footing,

A metaphorical shout? Imaginary whiskey, hmmm, not much fun, really. Or what about an offering - a poem, a song?

  • Current Status: Holidays,

    Happy New Year everyone.

Enjoy your holiday up north, Sofie - sounds a lovely place.

Fingers crossed that new Mac comes right for you Islander. I wish you an especially inspired year.

Jackie, your dog (Cleo?) is blessed to enjoy your unwavering devotion - as are your pupils. Water is a great healer and I hope your success portends more to come for the year.

I'm hoping for a watershed year, feel like I'm spiralling up and out of something, a bit like I've been underwater awhile and am heading for the surface, expecting unfamiliar air. I won't arrive at the same place I went in.

  • Random Play: Ring out the old, ring in…,

Roger Ebert in his journal and his wonderful comments section

Thanks, Bob, that was well worth a read. Fine wordsmith.

Spooky to find several commenters alluding to Children of Men - a movie that has echoed for me, too, since doom lurched over the horizon. Pleased I have a large garden to eat from, although I really will have to stop growing so many pretty things that aren't edible. And a reasonably clean river down the road.

    sad little towns like Woodville

Just drove through there the other day - the Windmill capital of NZ, it says on the sign. Depends what you want, i guess - towns like Woodie are more into tourist and traveller dollars these days.

I spent some time there a while back at the Lindauer gallery and his old home (the painter, not the bubbly!), trying to track down the provenance of a painting that's still in my family. I suspect it was won in a card game, possibly from the artist himself.
