  • Speaker: John and Phil meet Bob,

You're going to have to imagine me seething with incoherent rage. Well, John and Phil, you've said "fuck you" to my family. Right back at you, bitches - I now have an open diary for the last Saturday in November because I'm not inclined to roll over the contract of either of these clowns.

  • Cracker: Another Capital Idea..., in reply to Damian Christie,

@Craig – but i still think it was a bad decision to leak it and let the opposition lead the conversation.

Quite - but I think the real risk is that Labour may forget Helen's favourite mantra: Under promise and over-deliver. What's smart politics/strategy this week, could turn turtle very quickly if Goff has another one of his attacks of foot-in-mouth disease or analysts (even though who support the idea of CGT) find serious design flaws, or fiscal holes, in the policy itself. (Labour certainly weren't shy about taunting Key with his, shall we say, somewhat over optimistic tax cut promises three years back.)

  • Cracker: Another Capital Idea..., in reply to Hilary Stace,

Trevor Mallard seems to be enjoying the media response in a way that suggests the ‘leak’ was carefully stage managed.

Of course it bloody was, and if I hear another journalist say "Labour refuses to talk publicly" I'll bloody bottle someone. What Labour is actually doing is refusing to answer any questions about policy - and the media are playing along.

And what I said back about a year and a half ago is that the British press should be very careful what they are doing in relation to spending time on that as opposed to all the other injustices that they could be spending their time on.

    Ugh.

Who needs Big Brother when you’ve got the News of the World? David Cameron could well be tarred by Coulson’s brush.

Frankly, I don't know if Miliband won't come to regret calling for a public inquiry into the dealings of the evil media. May well turn up some toads a little too close to home for his comfort...

  • Hard News: A Capital Idea?, in reply to Gareth Ward,

I suspect things are boding well for the policy when discussion (not just here, but one of DPF’s key points) tends towards “why aren’t we ALSO including the family home?”

To be nit-picky, Gareth, we don’t have any policy yet – and I wouldn’t presume the current Labour front bench won’t forget Helen’s favourite maxim: "Under promise and overdeliver". I don't think David Cunliffe's wee head-rush yesterday where he exclaimed Tuesday would change the future of this country or some crap like that was entirely wise.

Hell, my partner and I paid more tax than Google in 2009. Don’t be evil, my black arse.

Needless to say, I would be the first to applaud if Goff spend a few minutes on Tuesday laying out Labour’s plan to end the corporate culture of tax avoidance. Because you can’t tell me with a straight face that there’s anything “fair” about a profitable multi-national corporation doing the Irish jig to end up paying less tax in New Zealand than a teacher on an average salary of $42,900. That would be a fight I'd buy tickets to see.

  • Hard News: A Capital Idea?, in reply to BenWilson,

Well, I know John Key got sneer at for saying this but I think he has a point. Labour might be playing smart politics this week, but if the actual policy is full of loopholes and focus-grouped *cough* strategic ambiguity how credible is the “fairness’ line? Really?

The tax avoidance industry – like the poor – may always be with us, but our political lords and masters could make it a lot more difficult than they tend to do. While the base-arousing, headline friendly drip-feed sounds good, the devil really is in the details.

The more I read these threads, the more I realise my profound financial naivete. That would never have occurred to me.

I’m sure there’s any number of “tax specialists” who will think of all kinds of *cough* tax-minimisation strategies for a far-from-modest fee. Hell, my partner and I paid more tax than Google in 2009. Don’t be evil, my black arse.

  • Hard News: A Capital Idea?, in reply to BenWilson,

Some elderly people I know have done that, moving from trendy old Herne Bay out to Pt Chev, selling off a house that was highly appropriate when they had 5 kids living there, not so much when it was just 2 of them.

Well, yes. Not that long ago, I read a rather interesting bit of property porn about a woman in precisely that situation. It was also pretty strongly implied that while she had a sentimental attachment to the house she was born in, it was not only impractical for a single, elderly woman to manage a large house with extensive grounds but her pension wasn't covering the rates.

Very easy to forget that there are still people around who remember when Freeman's Bay was basically a slum and the construction of the Harbour Bridge made Ponsonby, Herne and Saint Mary's Bays much less fashionable than they are now (or were in the late 19th/early 20th centuries).
