Hard News: Angry and thrilled about Arie, in reply to
I don’t believe the minister has the authority to give orders to the police.
No, and if she does I won’t be calling for her resignation but her very public sacking. Blatant political meddling, even if I agree with the motives and find the outcome agreeable, is totally unacceptable.

Oh, and anyone who says "oh, menz can't write laydeze" needs to sod off and read Love and Rockets. Jaime and Gilbert Hernandez have been doing a pretty good job of writing complex magnificent women -- and ones who aren't straight white & middle-class at that! -- for nigh on thirty years .

Re: is (not) a Sport.
Sport is a thing where what you do to win directly opposes what the other person is doing to win at the same time. So, golf isn’t a sport but chess is? I don’t know, but it seems like the old distinction between arts and crafts. Faintly interesting, but since I can no more knit an afghan than paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling it’s really a distinction without a difference. I enjoy watching the fruits of people who do shit so far about my level of competence my neck hurts from looking up for long periods. :) (Might give the competitive wood chopping a miss, though. The very thought makes my back spasm with memories of an ill-advised - and doomed - fit of machismo.)

There are many more big, brown, buff gay boys playing rugby here than is generally acknowledged.
*cough* Isn’t it a shame that the usual suspect probably haven't even heard of the Bingham Cup? Now that’s rugby I could feign an interest in! :)

Hard News: The new riot reporter, in reply to
Just not only ‘lesbian writer’ and certainly not only ‘writer of things lesbian’.
Quite - and when I came Mary Renault at the age of thirteen (and firmly in the closet), I was convinced she was fronting for a gay man. How could a woman -- and one I presumed (incorrectly) was heterosexual - write so sympathetically and vividly about homos, not only in her historical novels but the quietly astounding The Charioteer? As I matured in all kinds of ways, I came to realize the answer was this: She did it one word at a time, like everyone else.

What, pray tell, is a Rugby World Cup? (Memo to self: Blackmail Maggie Smith into recording my answering machine message.)

Yes! Totally. I stopped being po-faced about horse racing after my first Melbourne Cup. It’s not about the stupid gambling. It’s about the hats, and the hotties under them.
I’ve got a cousin – really Aussie bloke – and he did his first full dress Melbourne Cup a couple of years back. Under duress from his (now) fiancee who is very much a She Who Must Be Obeyed kind of gel, need I add. The photos that did the rounds were georgeous – she was as pretty as a spring shower, and he looked indecently pleased with himself. As he well should. One of those moments where you suspect the human race might not be irredeemably fucked after all.

Then again, I can’t think of any other sport that has so starkly divided the country into urban liberals and rural racists…
By urban liberal "creatives" who work for fashionable ad shops? Sorry, not trolling for a fight but it needed to be said.

They’re annoying buggers, people, I’ll grant you that.
Yeah, people who fan-wank over football games are annoying. You’ll never catch me being an obsessive geek while everyone else shuffles towards the fire exit. No, sir…
and yachting’s for bores from the Shore –
Pish-posh you hipster wanker. :) I prefer to think of it as a plausible but flimsy rationale for packing a picnic basket and finding a good spot on North Head. Funny how a blazing summer's day in agreeable company is great Grinch solvent.
