  • Hard News: Sky and 2020,

    When the TAB decided to move exclusively to the Sky platform, a nice offer came out from Sky/TAB giving free installation and free 3 months access to TAB on Sky plus a bonus of a Sky channel rotated on a weekly basis to give non-Sky subscribers a taste of the basic channel offerings. As we'd just moved and needed a satellite connection for Freeview, we naturally took up the offer - and then cancelled on conclusion of the three month period as per the terms of the offer.

    Best value I've ever had out of Sky :-).

    And I watch races live online via the TAB website. It all worked out swimmingly.

    We had Sky many moons ago when it first started up. We dropped it because of their deal with NZRU - one of the worst examples of social exclusion in NZ to my mind.

    If as you say, those coverage rights sustain the game in this country, then they (NZRU) are likely in for a big pay cut too. I suspect the heady days are over.

    Our Pudcat (her name) has this special Youtube viewing platform. Cockatoos singing and dancing are her favorite. I feel it really deep for Christchurch... can so understand screaming at the word "resilient". We should teach cats to attack on that command.

    Hilarious - so the President who is so concerned to warn his public about fake news about his administration, repeats some fake news about someone else's administration;

    Even more hilarious that Fox wasn't included in his tweets about fake news;

  • Hard News: Burning down the house to…, in reply to Russell Brown,

    The interesting thing, I think, is that the iwi establishment has clearly been drifting away from Labour and towards the Maori Party. Labour has now tapped someone who has his own battles with that same establishment. It’s not necessarily a straight swap, but it’s quite an interesting dimension to the whole thing.

    It sure is an interesting dimension. That 'iwi establishment' you refer to seems to be becoming an iwi Establishment and an iwi establishment - a development that I suspect is of concern for all tangata whenua. We need Hone back in Parliament desperately as well.

    Thanks Hilary - the historical account in your post is uplifting in the sense that a precious life tragically and needlessly lost at least spurned action in NZ - but soul destroying at the same time, as if anything, it seems to me we have gone backwards in both policy and circumstance.

    So many children and their caregivers across a spectrum of circumstances in NZ, waiting, waiting, waiting in desperation for a government that addresses their needs. What you suggest in your final paragraph is of course a win-win solution for everyone, both the able and the disabled living and working in the sector. Everyone gets lifted up. What is wrong with an executive/Cabinet that cannot see that?

    On the 'widen the appeal' idea, I think I might be part of the target market. I know Willie Jackson outside his commercial radio career - met his mother too and got to understand what they were trying to do with both Maori broadcasting and the urban Maori authority. My respect for him and his family will never diminish;
