  • Hard News: The God Thing,

    Paul said:

Even if God does exist, if he is outside nature and so outside space and time, then he does not matter.

Ah, but you see, at the same time he's outside nature, he's also micromanaging everything. Collins seems to have several sorts of God to call on, depending on the question.

It's a shame that the Time moderator didn't press him on the obvious question: how do you know it's the Biblical God? What made you pick that one? If you were going to pick a faith to cohere with known things about nature, you'd probably choose Taoism or something, not the anthropomorphic Abrahamic God.

Ah, so a national stadium funded by the whole nation shouldn't be commented upon by those south of the Bombays?

No, it just seemed unduly bitchy given the taxpayer money ploughed into national assets in Wellington over the years.

  • Island Life: The One Minute Stadium,

Even the crass Aussie's, despite screams of protest from the philistine rump, managed in the end to build their spectacular opera house.

And that was considered a scandal for years ...

They've also managed Darling Harbour, which is shopping and hospitality; and Melbourne's brilliant sports precinct by the Yarra, home to three stadia (they actually turned a road in a riverside promenade for that!), and even Brisbane's museum/gallery quadrant. They build lots of big, public spaces in Australia. I admire them for it.

Really? Maybe you should. It was a councillor who, on your behalf demanded a 50 year plan rather than a stadium.

Quite. That was a monumentally weird thing to say in the circumstances. Did she want to look completely daft?

I'd love it if Aucklanders could grow up and lose the enourmous chip on their shoulders about Wellington; given the way it's infected Russell of late, I guess neither of us will be getting what we want.

I was thinking of a particular Dom Post column last week whining about the potential cost and casting aspersions on Auckland. It seemed a bit rich.

I'll echo the comment that it would perhaps be best located in Christchurch, if we have to have a "National Stadium" at all; as a previous poster noted, Aucklanders seem almost singularly uninsterest in showing up to sporting events in their fair city when compared to other centres, and Christchurch certainly doesn't suffer from that problem.

Well, actually, Canterbury wasn't getting big crowds for Ranfurly Shield games this season, and wasn't there a test match that didn't sell out out at Jade? Auckland does seem to be the only city that can reliably fill a 60k ground for test matches.

  • The NZ Web's greatest hits (and misses),

For those of us building the damn thing, it was a combination of not-knowing-what-we-were-doing (1996 - did anyone?) and bonkers management decisions. Everyone remembers the ridiculous homepage - a fullscreen jpg that took about 3 min to load on a 28.8 modem - but you don't know how often we tried to talk the blokes in charge out of going with it.

Ah yes, the giant client-side image map. It was created by a basket-case development firm called Digital Video Productions, based in Brisbane. Telecom was talked into buying DVP by Chris Tyler, the flashy American hired by Rod Deane to run Xtra. As far as I could tell, DVP knew bugger-all about internet development: their expertise was in CD-Roms, and it showed.

The awesome Xtra login system -- the one where the numerical customer IDs mapped directly to alphabetical passwords on a standard keyboard (the IDs were discoverable by use of the old "finger" command) -- was the creation of another Telecom asset in Australia, Pacific Star.

So, Russ, whats the story with vodafone then? Are they launching a new music service on nov 16, or something else?

I gather it's a music service, but nowt to do with iTunes.

I hope I'm right or I could have the proverbial egg on my face, but it came from an industry insider who would know

If it helps Simon, I'm hearing much the same from quite a different quarter ...

  • Hard News: Because I am weak,

With all due respect, Russell, I've three words for anyone who will do any such thing: Multiplex, Wembley Stadium.

A cautionary tale indeed. But there are some significant differences too. The Football Association was the commissioning client and got in a complete mess three years before the government came in to the rescue. And Multiplex has completed some significant structures ahead of schedule, including Telstra Stadium.

I'm inclined to regard contestability as a distraction in a project like this. After all, a tendering process didn't exactly provide a quality result in the case of the Vector Arena.

This thing will cost more than they're saying at the moment, but it would be nice to see an independent assessment of its deliverability. At the moment, everyone who says it can or can't be done seems to have a vested interest in what they're saying.

  • Eating Media Lunch,

There is no need to upload on YouTube. TVNZ are putting EML online in full.

Uploading on YouTube hooks you into a dynamic you don't get from streaming off your corporate site, but it's still a good move.

Tip for Mac users. If you use the Flip4Mac components and plugin to view the TVNZ clips you can download them. When, of course, they have finally loaded ...
