  • Random Play: The Roaring Silence,

The North Harbour Stadium, situated as it is in the middle of a vast industrial area, would seem the most common-sense and least offensive of all the options -- though I must confess to finding the Carlaw Park presentation most appealing.
The NH option, apart from being the cheapest and quickest to build, would leave heaps of spare cash to concentrate on improving the NH-City transport system.

Yeah, but the trains run right past Stadium Australia and it still went broke, because there's basically bugger-all there when you walk out the gate. OTOH you have the brilliant sports precinct right next to the Melbourne CBD.

The other problem with NHS is that you will never get Auckland rugby relocating there. So Eden Park stays, with all its costs, and there's a 60,000 seat stadium in a place where the the local provincial team struggled to pull 10,000 all season.

Leaving aside all the stuff about process and harbour views, the CBD stadium would have been easily the most viable of the potential venues. As you might be able to tell, I'm still kind of bummed about it ...

  • Radiation: All this, and Lucy too,

Besides, who the hell wants to watch something as dense and novelistic as The Wire or Deadwood rationed out in 50-minute snippets, once a week, and interrupted by commercials every 15 minutes?

When I went to the US this year, the last (and shabbiest) hotel I stayed in had HBO and widescreen TVs in room. I watched Spike Lee's Hurricane Katrina doco, over four hours, occasionally briefly interrupted by promos, and I thought, how glorious. While we're bashing free-to-air TV, it's probably worth noting that Sky ain't too flash either ...

No, but I'm sure there's someone at TV3 whose job is to rattle the Broadcasting Standards Code and all relevant practice notes and decisions in a vaguely intimidating manner. :)

I think they're actually called the "internal censors". You want to be (well, actually, you don't want to be) somewhere really risk-averse like Radio NZ. Towards the end of Off the Wire on NatRad, they were vetoing a a lot of the better jokes.

  • Hard News: Something up with Apple?,

Those companies have a head start that is almost insurmountable.

But less so, perhaps, in the US, where the big global mobile brands aren't so utterly dominant, and where there's room for Sidekicks and Blackberrys.

As I recall, the rumours have been saying there will be two iPhones - a basic model that plays music, and a full-featured handheld computer product.

    BTW ...

Q: Who's the fourth-biggest music retailer in the country, and climbing?

    A: Vodafone.

Telecom is a long way back ...

And that is it. Innocent, playful fun turned into something altogether different through a conspiracy of actors and director.

But it was still innocent and playful. Just perhaps a little more ... educational.

Oh, by the way, 'Life On Mars' is an absolutely cracking little series - a joy to watch.

Damn right. Can't wait for series 2 to hit the wires. Interestingly, creator Matthew Graham says it will be the last: "We decided that Sam's journey should have a finite life span and a clear-cut ending and we feel that we have now reached that point after two series."

Excellent. If only the creators of Lost had been allowed to make the same decision.

Also: David E. Kelley is writing and producing a pilot for an American version. Not so sure about that.

But, James, you must tell us this: what exactly were the script directions for Van and Aurora's intimate moment? Or was Ant Starr just improvising?

If the OS was a portable version of OSX then that would be interesting in itself....

Hey, maybe it's time for the Newton OS revival!

Other possibilities: a tooled-up verion of the iPod OS, or an adaptation of an existing Java platform.

    and a "cool" OS??

Actually, that definitely sounds like the sexiest part. Any guesses on what that OS might be?

  • Island Life: How to smoke an MP,

The limit of your metaphor is this: cigars are one domain where bigger really is better, because a skilled roller can accommodate a more complex blend in a larger vessel. But if this were the case for MPs, National would obviously have a different deputy leader this week.

So, after the watersead on a weeknight? Frak... weren't you paying attention. Science fiction is for kids, while grown-ups prefer doctors, police procedurals and increasingly surreal 'reality' shows.

We've been downloading and watching 'Torchwood', the adult Doctor Who spin-off. It's sort of uneven and all over the place, but eminently watchable.

There's shagging in every episode, predatory lesbian aliens, the lot - Russell T. Davies appears to be having some fun.

I suspect Prime will find a spot for it. Their evening schedules are a bit looser, and Karen Bieleski is a closet fangirl.
