  • Island Life: Internet the way you want it,

Finally I think there IS already just the network that Rod's talking about, govt funded even ..... at least something to build a greater infrastructure on - the new University net is I understand being built on existing dark fibre and would probably make a great start for just this sort of expansion - in fact I get the impression that its powers-that-be may already have such plans ....

The Advanced Network? That's an interesting story. The original MORST proposal was for a much more open club: a gigabit network in which local businesses could be stakeholders alongside universities and research institutions.

Two things saw that rolled back to a more private club. One: Telecom screamed blue murder about being competed against with public money. And to some extent, Two: the research camp felt more comfortable with a non-commercial advanced network in line with overseas models.

Telecom doesn't really want to part with dark fibre - it wants to form part of the network with its own managed services, which rather defeats the point. It's intriguing the extent to which this is really a physical problem: you just need lots and lots of fibre, enough for everyone to run their own services the way they want.

Other countries (say, Canada) wound up with substantial over-capacity after the tech bust, as a sunk cost. We didn't, which means we bloody well have to build it.

Even if Telecom can fix its traffic management on Go Large, we still have a problem, because the kind of things it's reserving the right to throttle - Skype, P2P and, soon, Joost - are the kind of things the rest of us want to work well.

NB: Other people know a lot more about the Advanced network than I do. If anyone wanted to drop in with a more informed discussion of the issues, I'd be grateful.

A post-doc I worked with did some stuff on gout a while back (some family member had it). Aside from cherries she also recommended parsley juice (pres all the anti-oxidants in the chlorophyll do something). I'd try mixing it with apple juice or carrot juice.

Ta. The cherry extract seems to work well for me, and is backed up by some actual science - although it's bastard hard to buy in NZ.

You mean Monsoon Poon doesn't cut it as 'sophisticated'?

    Heh.

I'll take it - and hide the map so that all the white people don't turn up there en masse, encouraging the chefs to dilute the recipes, as has happened to so many places in the past... It's not the white people's fault, let me make that clear! But you *know* that's how it goes.

Ooh, now we see the cultural generalisations ... when have I ever asked anyone to dilute a recipe? Keep this up and I'll have to start making fun of your kiwifruit nectars ...

  • Hard News: Geekstuff,

Gravatars make PA System slow to load, especially for threads with multiple pages of comments. I think if you're going to have avatars, they need to come from the local server, or an Akamaised one.

For me, Gravatar is 200ms+ away but Telecom's Global-Gateway likes to drop packets en route, so Gravatars often don't load. Slow load times was one reason I removed MyBlogLog, as the Avatars there too several seconds each to come down through the tubes.

Hmmm. And it seems to have been worse in the past couple of days. How much longer should we give them?

Also, am I detecting a mood agin the use of " target="_blank"> here? I like the way it manifests in Firefox now, but am I alone?

Also I find that island or coastal whiskies that are peated are very distinctive and drinkable from a young age, while the Highland and Speyside whiskies generally need a bit more time: 10yo Glenlivet is boring, but the 25yo is fantastic.

I very much had that experience at Dramfest. I've never had the opportunity (and am not likely to until the next festival) to try so many aged and excellent Speysides. And they were fantastic.

Russell, I am curious as to your distinction between Laphroaig and Lagavulin: both are heavily peated and coastal, although Laphroaig is more pungent and oily to the Lagavulin's dry elegance. Also, geographically the distilleries are as equivalent to each other as are Island Bay and Seatoun.

Yep, distilleries a mile apart, isn't it? But don't they taste very different to you? The Lagavulin is richer and more complex and, of course, the casks are exposed to the sea air. So it's more, say, Lyall Bay ...

So what's worth getting in the duty free then either in Auckland or Australia?

The Aberlour 10 year-old is great value at less than $60 for a litre. Ditto the Cragganmore for five bucks more.

For $70 there's the Longmorn 15yo, and for $80 the Talisker is super.

For something smoother (and you could probably even mix coke with it), the Johnny Walker Green Label, not a single malt but a blend, is $70.

Russell means add target="_blank" or similar tag :)

Yes, that's what we use over on PA classic, where us kids are still allowed to fool around with real HTML ;-)

But I've just realised that links in these forums only open in a new tab in Firefox. In Safari, it's a new window. Any one know why?

Also, I'm not suggesting some centralised control of the entire economy but... building schools and hositals when existing facilities are full is a pretty good way of ensuring waiting lists and over-crowded schools.

I think even in PC's minimalist state, you'd want to be able to plan police resourcing too. Well, actually especially if you were running basically open borders.
