  • Hard News: Music's emerging digital market,

Also, I'd be happy to see Flash die.

You know, me too. But that doesn't make Job's control freakerie any more attractive. His "think of the children" line is exactly the one being used by China, Australia and the "entertainment" industry to close down the freedom of the internet as we know it.

And the knee jerk defence of *anything* Apple does by Apple users is a little weird, don't you think?

  • Hard News: Music's emerging digital market,

I like JB for their pricing[..] but I don't linger there.

Christ I'll say. I went in to the Wellington one in the BNZ Centre last week for the first time. It nearly induced vomiting. I had to beat a hasty retreat.

  • Hard News: Paul Reynolds: A Contribution,

Very nicely put. I am trying to keep track of links because I think it is important have as much written down about Paul as possible. He was a very influential thinker.

Sticking them here for now (sorry about the cross link) but I hope that someone closer to him could take up the task.

As with Sam Morgan, you are welcome to make additional direct payments

Whilst "fuck off" was a reasonable response to this comment it is worth, just for the record, pointing out why.

Taxation, whether by the government, the Pope or your feudal lord relies on a collective. They idea is that it is only an effective system if most of us contribute.

So, whilst it is lovely if individuals, rich and poor, donate an extra proportion of their income to worthy causes we can only guarantee that this will be effective on a large and sustainable basis if everyone gets taxed on the same basis. There is no point in individuals "paying more" if they chose to do so, the marginal effect is negligible.

  • Speaker: Seeking Better Science,

Tim Groser on the "open source way" for climate change science.

    http://www.3news.co.nz/Tim-Groser-17-April-2010/tabid/1356/articleID/151528/Default.aspx

Groser didn't necessarily do the best job at explaining the concept (under some surprisingly hostile questioning) but the idea is this, in order for our science investment to sustain we are, on balance, better off releasing openly, getting recognition and more funding from overseas and helping to ensure that the research reaches a wider audience.

If they are untucked they are stripy shirted...and probably also from north of the Bombay Hills.
