  • Up Front: The Missionary Position,

To sort of reply to Andrew and andin's comments,

Oh, Im a pussy cat I rarely snap at strangers especially in person.
And usually when "spiritually" comes up I shut up and just enquiry politely about the brand. I dont eat old ladies for breakfast, am very selfless (Well I think I am) will help friends, strangers not with any idea that this will gain me some reward in an afterlife, but as an act of common humanity.
The Golden Rule (do unto others) is a great principle regardless of its origin. And the fact that 2000 yrs ago such an idea should be a guiding ideal to be preserved and passed on, in the face the sheer brutality prevalent at the time, by anyone, is testament to their courage.
And maybe the thought/idea that this is what their god wanted them to do so they did it, was all they had as the positive reinforcement in the face of terrifying odds they faced.
But we dont live in those times (unless you're in range of Sharia law). And this really is a time when we as a species with a large brain capable of practicing empathy and compassion at a distance and on a large scale, purely because it is the right thing to do, should be doing just that.
If we owe our ancestors anything it is to show we can mature as a species because we have the capacity to do so. We dont need any spurious supernatural reasons to do so, as perhaps they did.

Emma you mum sounds like a lovely person(a product of her time and era as we all are I guess), but even nice people do things for maybe the wrong reason, and it doesnt do much harm.

I just think self delusion is the wrong approach considering the times in which we now live. Truth and honesty in all things must be what we live by. For that reason I cant buy into any statements like spiritually means different things to different people( I just think relativism) Which is, I think, a product of the millenia of divisive tribalism that has dominated our recent past. And I will argue this point with people who are robust enough to hold a decent argument.

Oh dear I can go on cant I. Sorry.

    Science agrees.

Jesus didn't have all that much to say about The Gays, perhaps that makes a difference to him.

Your point being? I dont remember much about gays in Taoist or Buddhist philosophy either.
Or are you just stroking your beard?

  • Up Front: The Missionary Position,

Where's our famed Kiwi reticence about religion?

Or was it more an unwillingness to talk about something that is complete bollocks, and just nodding in agreement rather than voicing the words. "Dont talk complete shit"

I have the spiritual impulses of a brick.

Me too. But it took a while to turn in the brick I am today.Still I'd rather it out in the open than locked away in individual minds, cause like consipation, toxins can build up and the next thing ya know a nasty outbreak occurs, boils sores, preaching, accosting people in the streets
Me, as the recession really bits, Im expecting an outbreak of religiosity to occur. Humanity is that predictable now. And Ray Comfort shall return to these shores and bring his banana with him.

"Well, dear heart, I don't suck cock in church."

haha The best illustration of the human minds ability to compartmentalise I've seen in a long time. Neuroscience would have a feild day with your thoughts, I suggest submitting yourself for study.

  • Hard News: Mac Ouch,

There are no surviving recordings of Mark Twain, but the impersonations here and here (actually voiced by a contemporary of Clemens') seem to be within the ballpark.

I listened a few times and then reread the text, D Dawg was banished and the words came to life in a new voice.
And its was even more inspiring, 'specially that last sentence with its drawn out sc's, br's and w's.
Scatterbrained web society sounds so different.

  • Hard News: Mac Ouch,

    I hope Mr Sterling had moved past irony when he said this;

I've never seen so much panic around me, but panic is the last thing on my mind. My mood is eager impatience. I want to see our best, most creative, best-intentioned people in world society directly attacking our worst problems. I'm bored with the deceit. I'm tired of obscurantism and cover-ups. I'm disgusted with cynical spin and the culture war for profit. I'm up to here with phony baloney market fundamentalism. I despise a prostituted society where we put a dollar sign in front of our eyes so we could run straight into the ditch.

The cure for panic is action. Coherent action is great; for a scatterbrained web society, that may be a bit much to ask. Well, any action is better than whining. We can do better.

I find it very moving, even in drawly US tone which sounds like Deputy Dawg in my head.

  • Hard News: Self-satisfactorily Yours,

And in other news Kanye West has announced he is spending the rest of his life standing in front of a mirror as he is just so fucking awesome.

  • Hard News: Self-satisfactorily Yours,

because the show I saw crackled along nicely.

Yes pacing is one aspect of a good show usually thanks to a good editor.
But Go Girls rarely rose above the level of French farce. I just support it cause it keeps people I know in work. And maybe someday on NZ television there will be non neutered drama.

But I guess that unsightly bulge called Middle New Zealand is always going to get in the way.

And OF isnt that great even with push up bras, drug references, and sales of the ?format to some ?asian networks.
Maybe Diplomatic Immunity will be such a beast.

  • Hard News: The Casino,

This has better suggestions that the Job Summit.

This place seems to me not so far off the opium dens that used to cluster just up the road from the casino.

Hobson St was so much more interesting back in the 50's & 60's
Bring back the opium dens, but only for those over 60 cause this recession will pass in a haze and hell who gives a FF about being addicted in old age.

It occurred to be that a cheaper option would be to legalise MDMA, which would bring the kids of Europe and America here in their millions.

I hear angels singing John, can you hear them,
John helloooo. Oh thats right he's over in Aust promoting NZ as a gay travel destination.

  • OnPoint: Two wallops of wonk, with a…,

I hear that everyone other than rich white men are woefully underrepresented.

But are they getting paid to do this?
    Dammit they are.
I guess that seals it the verdict is in. While the post war generations exhibited certain amounts of angst about what previous rich white folk did to the world; wars, multiple cultural genocides, colonialism the list goes on. And tried to curtail these excesses, well they were only little wars.

What is their legacy an arcane financial system they insist on propping up, the dismantling of social services and making everyone pay for education and health services, plus making lives even more dull and narrow(for the majority unless you worship money or sport) and a heavy larding on the buttocks and brains of quite a few people.
Yes I blame the fuckers who took us in this direction.

In this country starting with Muldoon and coming full circle with Shkey. And while Labour tried to right some wrongs with little successs, they allowed themselves to be bullied internationally.

She's best thought of as the Ann Coulter of the Antipodes.

Or for an analogy closer to home; Garth George in a Dress.
'scuse me I just have to go and throw up.

  • Hard News: The Crusaders,

Both links are from the discussion under a wildly shrill the-greenies-dunnit post from Poneke

Ugh a moderated blog. Which means this poneke is a plonker who just likes ego massaging posts, or contrarian posts he can moderate, think up a rebuttal to and then put both up.

He seems to have a few crap ideas.

    Controlling bush
