an opinion piece in the SMH

All Miranda Devine "opinion pieces" should come with the warning:

Oh but it was, you have just described Roman society pre Constantine and his conversion

I was kind of meaning the modern day version of multiculturalism.
It was just a thought game. I didnt mean it seriously.
Tho' I liked Gibbons book when I read it many moons ago verbose or not.

  • Hard News: A Full Sense of Nationhood,

Is it within the bounds of possibility that respect and sensitivity is a two way street, especially in a context, like a work-related event where it's not actually easy for those who find it objectionable to absent themselves?

I see nuthin' but trouble further on down the line.

The best option is for those that want respect to court humility and question their beliefs. (For many an unthinkable option)

And those who show sensitivity to become more outspoken.
Sorry if the pill is bitter, but cant turn back the clock or stop people questioning.

    Only my opinion
    Dobro Vece

  • Hard News: A Full Sense of Nationhood,

For me, prayer is an incredibly powerful tool for (among much else) focusing and clarifying the mind. But I've no problem with doing that in private, and not trying to impose that on others. I'd also point out, in the context of tikanga Maori, my whanau includes Mormons, Rastafarians, Ringatu, Ratana, Jehovah's Witnesses, Anglicans and atheists -- as well as the odd fellow Catholic. What is spiritually meaningful to me is actually pretty offensive to many of them, and vice versa.

    God?
Or dont we mention s/he/it in polite company anymore?
If multiculturalism had been thought of and put into practice, oohhh say 2000 yrs ago we might all be atheists now.

  • Hard News: Effectively Friday,

we recorded another Media7 last night, with a panel on Fiji and the media (David Robie, Barbara Dreaver, Robert Khan

I found the points of view of the panel on Fiji very informative. I have had a sense that the position taken by both NZ & Aust govts since the last coup wouldnt help the situation.
Anyway good to see more informed ideas on the television.
Rather that "news journalists" stories consisting of a pollie doing a bit of grandstanding about bringing democracy ...reminds me of missionaries.

  • OnPoint: Don’t let them eat cake,

    I agree on both points.
The unemployment numbers will rise during this recession. Whatever plans govt touted during the election to "stimulate" the economy will just have to wait.
I personally think the whole idea of continuing upward and outward economic growth needs to be seriously revised world wide maybe put on hold until humanity starts colonising the solar system.

Now that would solve the boyracer problem...

  • Hard News: The Trophy Hunter,

I was just being all Generation X-referencey about the PMRC hearing in which Dee Snider featured prominently

Yep, those generational differences have become so slim yet so hugely important as a point of difference for those that like to think they are on the misunderstood (but Im right anyway) side of this imaginary divide.

despite the fact that his band was hugely, hugely inoffensive and kind of cartoony, and all the American politicians were totally square, daddy-o.

Well as I was in New Zealand when all this was going on and was otherwise occupied. I took no notice.

And Dee Snider wouldn't be part of any hip-hop related hearing like that nowadays. Because his band is 30 years old. And glam-metal. And was never very threatening anyway.

Well maybe it was to the totally square daddy-o's. And the great thing was he was an incredibly articulate advocate, his cynically manipulative musical output aside.

So me saying that was supposed to be deliberately ridiculous.

    Well it was ridiculous.

  • Hard News: The Trophy Hunter,

Please, no more Dee Snider speeches in front of House Committees! I couldn't bear it.

Shit, so that was, what 15- 20 yrs ago?
Shit someone has even made a docudrama about it.
Thank thuck the world doesnt live to by your sensitivities.
Is this a throwaway line, Im hoping it is.

Cause by any other yardstick (sorry metric ruler) this has to be the stupidest thing I have seen in writing since some dunce wrote he's risen from the dead.

I saw the highpoint of Dennis Miller's career a couple of weeks ago on C4's Fright Night.
Tho' he was outclassed by Erica Eleniak.
