  • Hard News: #JohnDotBanks and all, in reply to Sofie Bribiesca,

Actually, from that footage I saw on Friday(?) JB required all to stand and toast so it was JB who was big noting, otherwise it would have been the property developer owner, doing thanks etc in his own place, who as an aside I have no problem with.
    Banks was the host.

You're probably right, but I wonder if Banks isn't some kind of peculiarly NZ phenomenon. Like Tim Shadbolt and Michael Laws he's ostensibly a politician, but they don't stand for any kind of principle or belief beyond exploiting their recognition factor. Get Banksie to do the MC-ing, he's a pro, animatronic mouth & all. Like he's some kind of celebrant.

Do they have people like that in other countries? Australia has a few endemic species of political grotesque, but nothing quite like Banks, or those other professional Mayors of wherever will have them.

  • Hard News: #JohnDotBanks and all, in reply to Alec Morgan,

    ACT is now officially munted.

Once upon a time a sometime McGillicuddy Serious candidate was hauled before a Hamilton court for failing to complete a census return. He gave the excuse that, at the appointed moment for which one is supposed to furnish personal details, he'd been lying insensible while possessed by the spirit of "pithecanthropus". After prompting by the judge he admitted to having deliberately invoked the possession, and was let go with a token penalty.

Perhaps there's some kind of legal precedent there for Banks, who deliberately invoked the wizened incubus of ACT to build a bunkhouse in his little black heart.

  • Cracker: Are you Ready to Laugh?, in reply to Hilary Stace,

the mother-in-law/fat/red-head comedy doesn't tend to be particularly common these days among the comedians who are talented enough to be brought in from afar for our entertainment, at least not since the 1950s :)

    With a smiley too.
Looks like you can add the tragically unhip to that list Hilary.

  • Southerly: Bricks and Mortar, in reply to Islander,

There's a detailed account of the traditional uses of kiekie flowers, among other items of culinary interest, in the online version of Rod McDonald's fascinating Te Hekenga, available here. Starts on page 58 of the PDF version. Includes a mention of an extensive and deliberately maintained kiekie 'orchard' of the Muaupoko that once graced the shores of the now sadly diminished Lake Horowhenua.

But sometimes, laughing at stereotypes is the best way of addressing them.

Might help to have a personal connection to the group being stereotyped? 'My nigger' and all.

IMHE it's vital to be able to laugh when you're responsible for someone who, for whatever inherent reason, doesn't have the standard means of engaging with the world. It's a real blessing when they have a sense of humour, though as often as not you might not laugh at the same things. And there will always be those times when you may be laughing at them, rather than with them, which can be a little troubling until you realise that they also do it to you.

Man on seat, Auckland Domain 1989.

Originally hand printed at the dodgy old Auckland University darkroom.

Thanks for the contributions Sofie and Jackie. Nice one 'other half!' ;-)

Like, like, and like. Cup runneth over.

There are some nice portraits among the work here of Australian Bruce Upton. One of my faves, the late John Webster, aka Webster The most formidable and entertaining of Sydney's Hyde Park Sunday speakers. The Wizard learned much of his craft from attending Webster's 'meetings' in his pre-NZ days.

  • Hard News: Doug the Goth, in reply to Just thinking,

We came back to be haunted by the ragged curtains blowing out of the windows facing down Victoria St and then the pigeons flying in.

Only this morning the esteemed Kim Deitch happened to post a page from a past meisterwork on that very theme.
