What should happen to the couple of hundred thousand people receiving a benefit? They should get work instead.

More people in the workforce means more employment positions.

    It's fairly simple, really.

My first thought was: More people in the workforce does NOT mean more employment positions. It just means a cheaper workforce.

But then I realised I wasn't taking a holistic view - your logic is not only amazing but can be applied globally. What should happen to the couple of hundred thousand people starving in Africa? They should eat instead.

    It's fairly simplistic. Really.

  • Hard News: The newest neocon catastrophe,

Hard to [know] how a Kerry administration would have been much different in this regard (except handing Iraq to Al Qaeda and Iran’s Shia militias).

Yes, of course. And the Handover Ceremony would have probably look something like this:

  • Hard News: The newest neocon catastrophe,

Something seems to have gone horribly wrong here. Did Saakashvili think contributing 2000 troops to the Iraq project meant he'd get military backing if he made a move?

The whole thing has necon teh stoopid written all over it.

Stoopid? Stupid like a Fox! I think the Iraq debacle has shown us that the Neo-cons aren't afraid of breaking a lot of eggs to make a little omelette. How better to wake the sleeping bear than by convincing Georgia to kick Russia in the nuts and see what happens? The NeoCons will acheive their goal: Georgia will be fast-tracked into Nato and US/Nato troops will be on Russia's border to protect another oil pipeline.

It was actually when the Ottoman's went to town and invaded Europe. Something that McCain should known, since ...

    ... he was there.

Obama's response wasn't particularly heartening either... 3 days later he simply matches McCain's "tough talk" on Russia... I suppose US politics would still always demand a "blame Russia" response though...

Asked and answered. Despite his recent Berlin speech, Obama is running for POTUS not POTW.

The TVNZ news last night on this was just pathetic - it was Olympics are fun! ... oh, and there's a war somewhere...

Yes, I noted that when they gave the 6.30 'highlights' recap they led with the Georgia headline - a shame they didn't manage to lead the actual bulletin with it. Altho' I have a sneaking suspicion you and I are out of step with what the masses wanted to see first.

    Housekeeping:

Please tell me there's a missing sarcasm tag attached to this.

Yup. What's the netiquette here? Should I add 'LOL' or :) or ;)

For her to be a "teenage DPB mum" with a six year old, she would have to have been 12-13 at the age of her first pregnancy. I assumed it was sarcastic, since no-one sane would make this assertion so boldly.

Yup, see above. Altho' my dig was more at the ppl who perpetuate the myth of the teenage DPB breeders. They don't do the maths, as you have done.

What percentage of people on welfare do you imagine are in genuine need of it? I would say the number is well below 1%.

We're not in Taipei now, Dr Dexter.

  • Hard News: Just marketing to the base,

    But seriously ...

I'm straddling both sides of the fence here. As I said earlier I like the idea in principle, but I can't see how it would actually work. But even those One News deems opposed to the idea also think training would be a good thing:

    Alexi O'Brien reports

You have to scroll to the end of the first chapter, but the DPB mum interviewed says "if somone's been on the DPB for a while they may need some training to get back into the workforce".

Well, isn't that exactly what National are proposing?

Did anyone else think when National released its delightful policy yesterday: "Nine years in Opposition, and that's the best you can do?"

No, but I thought it an odd policy given that Nats all know that when given the choice of doing 15 hours a week work/training once your child turns six, or having another baby, a teenage DPB mum will always choose to get herself knocked up again. And then claim not to know who the father is, which is probably true, because they ... y'know ... are quite free with their favours.

End all taxation that powers welfare.

But we'll keep the taxation that funds the Police, Ambulance, and Fire Brigade right? And the Embassies, and the ... no, that's it. Everything else should be__ user pays__. Esp the Prisons.
