  • OnPoint: To Whom it May Concern,

Mr Drummond personally walked from our Belarus depot with 19 cartons of cigarettes internally concealed within his person.

    Studly dude.

  • Capture: Two Tales of a City, in reply to Lilith __,

How people can make nasty comments about this woman beggars belief, but they are, in great numbers.

From the Press's Terms and Conditions for Comments:

You will not post any material in the comments areas:
which racially or religiously vilifies, incites violence or hatred, or is likely to offend, insult or humiliate others based on race, religion, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation or any physical or mental disability; or which you know or suspect (or ought reasonably to have known or suspected) to be false, misleading or deceptive.

You could be forgiven for assuming that whoever monitors these things appears to be asleep at the keyboard some of the time. While it doesn't ameliorate the nastiness, most of it appears to come from those with very short attention spans. The day before the police made their humiliating backdown over the lightbulb looting nonsense the Press's comments were literally baying for a public lynching. Suddenly overnight it was a non-issue.

No he doesn’t see much place for a shrinking number of academics, at the University of Auckland. It’s student numbers that would shrink, at the University of Auckland.

The pesky public. Drastically reduce your old client base and suddenly "It's ideal . . . A few people have even thanked us for being here."

discovered the joy of Chinese optometry

Does anyone know if prescription glasses are actually put together in NZ any more? Because in my recent experience what used to take 2-3 days now takes around that many weeks. Chinese product without Chinese pricing?

I don't know if the presence of phylogeneticists in 1912 would disprove evolution, but I imagine it might cause physicists some concerns.

Molecular phylogeneticists certainly, but I didn't say that. While the word phylogeneticist might not have been in common use, phylogeny would appear to have been around for a few decades.

Mind you, a geologist friend of ours pointed out that opposition to plate tectonics really only died out when a heap of older geologists died...

While I'm old enough to remember continental drift theory, which was what they called plate tectonics in my schooldays, I wasn't around in 1912 when rabbits made the taxonomic shift from Rodentia to Lagomorpha. Perhaps that too had to be postponed until certain senior phylogeneticists had 'left the room'.

  • Capture: EQNZ Remembrance, in reply to Sofie Bribiesca,

Sofie I'm sure we'll be hearing plenty more from Mike Coleman. Here he is about 3 weeks back on CTV.

As for Labour, I guess it's up to them. Megan Woods has spoken up lately, just a teensy bit but it's a start. There's an unbelievably crude but vociferous clobbering machine that goes into shrieking overdrive in the Press's online comments whenever Lianne Dalziel so much as takes a public breath.

And Capture, I rather wish I'd been at the Sumner event instead, but you have to see these things through.

  • Capture: EQNZ Remembrance, in reply to Hebe,

Sorry Hebe, bad paraphrasing on my part then, here's the line from your post:
"I tend to think that the protests are Hugh Pavletich and the Lynches (David Lynch is a brother) way of diverting the left and the vulnerable."

Agree with all of your observations above. Speaking purely for myself, having contributed to CU's cause, both in cash and kind, I've now seen enough to convince me that they're potentially every bit as contemptuous of the ordinary people of Christchurch as those they came together to oppose.
