Gnnnaaarrr this crazy editing is making me grumpy. The cheery segue from the youth benefit stuff to the "hey vote for me" wrap-up is just bizarre.

Obviously that was done by someone's nephew, too.

Hope someone clever enough to make one is reading this thread!

But Key said he knew the questions they were going to ask him.

Why does he not have snappy answers for them, then? Such loooooooong-winded replies... eye-glazingly boring stuff.

Something about all the focus on JK as a "great leader" is giving me flashbacks to McPhail and Gadsby's Muldoon-lampooning mash-up of the Good Night Kiwi & the closing scene of The Waltons: "Night, Leader!"

Alas, I can't find any video online. But now I'm dreaming of a third-degree mash-up...

Haven’t watched them yet, but whoah, the screen-grabs alone are eloquent.

Labour and Greens in a warm summery palette and natural, everyday surroundings, looking the viewers cheerfully in the eye -- vs. a clammy, stricken-looking Key on an empty dark set lit by a chilly blue TV-screen glow, gazing anxiously offstage...

Do we know who the art director was on that one??

  • Field Theory: The Black Sand,

I've been getting reports from my bro-in-law at Maketu, where he's helping with the clean-up. Pretty dispiriting stuff.

The godwits had just arrived back at the estuary a week or so before the Rena ran aground. Among them, the famous E7 (who was tracked a few years ago as the fastest to fly the Alaska-NZ route - nearly 12,000km non-stop in 8 days). She's quite the iconic bird - she's only got one leg these days, which would make it all the harder for her to wade her way to safety if/when the oil washes in.

Funny how we saw a lot of news about Happy Feet, but very little (so far) about this highly symbolic "Sad Foot" and her dotterel pals. The wetlands people & DOC are keeping a close eye and have taken several dozen of the endangered dotterels into protective custody, but the bird sanctuary is really at the mercy of the winds and the tides. And it's nesting season. :-(

I keep thinking it's only a matter of time before the craftsters turn their attention to bespoke products for gents (along similar lines to the DIY menstrual gear). Linen, oiled silk paper, tortoise shell... but don't expect a run on the ones made from animal intestines.

I will never look at a dipping bird the same way again. (Perhaps no accident that in my mind they are filed in the 1970s alongside shagpile-carpeted passion pits...).

    Also, this and this.
