  • Up Front: Towards a Sex-Positive Utopia, in reply to Emma Hart,

Mass hysteria, whatever the focus, makes me fucking uncomfortable.

I know what you mean. But is it experienced by the individuals involved as 'mass hysteria,' or is it just a conglomeration of individual mad passionate crushes? The sort of random cathexis (jargon alert!) that helps one figure out what pushes one's buttons, y'know? Just in a widely dispersed, Dionysian bobbysoxy form?

I mean, there is something deeply suspicious (and profiteery) about how all those crushes point in One Direction - capitalist false consciousness ahoy! - but I'm pretty sure each girl or boy feels it as genuinely and personally as possible. Allison Pearson's rather sweet novel about Davy Jones, I Think I Love You, is a nice exploration of the way a phenomenon can be at once massive, and deeply personal.

But this all strikes me as a distraction from the, ahem, meat of your piece, which is fantastically attractive and logical. If we can combine that with a socialist utopia in which everyone gets paid properly & protected in their work environment, and those with specific needs who can't otherwise afford it are taken care of via government vouchers, it'll be perfect!

  • Up Front: One, Redux, in reply to Russell Brown,

It was Hewitt Humphrey reading the names of the dead that did me in. But that's only one facet of it. Emma, Blair, David, everyone's stories ... each one a prism of something too immense to make sense of in one go... magnitude is maybe the word I'm groping for.

  • Up Front: One, Redux, in reply to Hilary Stace,

There's a sympathetic nor'wester blowing away the cobwebs in Auckland, too.

For some reason, I keep thinking of a story of my Nana's, about the day the nor'wester whisked her knitting patterns out of her bag and scattered them down Riccarton Rd. She chased them, futilely, furiously, weeping with frustration. "Oh, I said a lot of words to that wind. Some of them very naughty."

I’m really not a big fan of tea. Brandy, on the other hand…

Brandy in a teacup it is, then. Actually, in a damn teapot. Let no one say we've lost the genteel way of doing things.

A walk and a nourishing bake sounds just the thing for the soul. And cherishing the luck and the love -- every day, today even more so.

There are not enough cups of tea in the world today. I wish I could make one for you in person, Emma. Milk, sugar, dash of brandy?

  • Southerly: Village People,

PS I know you just say these things to get attention, so I'm giving it to you in the form of a giant, inescapable virtual hug and a promise of hospitality ANY time you guys are in Auckland. It's the very, very least we can do.

  • Southerly: Village People, in reply to David Haywood,

My biggest consolation in terms of birthdays is that no matter how old I get I will always be three months younger than Jolisa Gracewood.

    Whippersnapper!

Seriously, dude: if I could somehow swap the seriously crappy bits of the last year (+ your unhappy move), for the wonderful bits of the last year (+ our happy move), you know I would. Of course, due to complicated physics, this would effectively render me 2 years younger than you forever, but I think you'll agree it's a fair price to pay.

  • Southerly: Deconstruction and Construction,

Whoa. When you guys move house, you REALLY move house. Also, I believe the Hay-Haywood clan motto is "when in doubt, build a tongue-and-groove dulcimer case" but I'm buggered if I know how to put that into Latin. Something close to dum spiro, spero, perhaps.

Those paving stones look ominously back-ruining to me. In the absence of a full-on PAS working bee (St Ian is a celestial army of one), d'you think Student Job Search might be able to help a little? What price a fully functioning paterfamilias, after all? Or get Polly busy with a trolley...

Best wishes for the rest of the move, and looking forward to the After-After photos.

Yes, but what have the cyclists ever done for us? (Apart from pneumatic tyres, ball bearings, roads...)

For my part, Russell, I would very much like it if you could provide us all with unicorns to ride around on. I think this is a very strong proposal, and I can’t see any reason not to just go ahead with it. There really is no downside.

I believe that Russell is already shipping the unicorns as I type. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe, etc, but I have actually SEEN. (In Kingsland, two days ago; see attached pic. Mine hasn't arrived yet but I know it's only a matter of time).
