  • Hard News: The Public Address Word of…,

Yup this was the year of #eqnz. No doubt. And someone's already mentioned the other #eqnz 'liquefaction'.

The other quakey word/phrase = 'No Go'.Which somehow always made me start to sing a bit of Hall & Oates 'I can't go for that (no can do)'.

  • Hard News: Every scene needs its stars,

This might add to your Christchurch music nostalgia - 80s band posters on the Christchurch City Libraries website, including quite a few from the Newtones.

  • Radiation: This Is Not My Dan Carter,

I'm with Geoff - Misfits is hilarious. Unexpectedly beautiful shots of the docklands. Snappy and iffy dialogue and insult trading ("I'm going to punch you in the c*nt so hard your mum will feel it"). Great characters - including superchavvy girl and bug eyed Ian Curtis-esque emo character.

And the music is ultra good - theme song by The Rapture is a corker.

    Adore it.

On the music front, I'm loving http://www.bootlegsfr.com/jedetestesergegainsbourg mashing Mister 'Fistful of Gitanes' with Biggie Smalls and other hippity hop is just so good.

  • Busytown: Holiday reading lust,

As Philip mentioned, Christchurch street and place names as compiled by Margaret Harper of Christchurch City Libraries. Lots of interesting information in there, and on the site in general.

We've also got a busy blog on books, movies, information and ideas. We blog from events such as the New Zealand Post Writers & Readers Week, and the Auckland Writers and Readers Festival too. Hopefully some of your book fans will take a look.

Oh can't wait to see Bright Star.
If you like poetic movies, try Pandaemonium, about Coleridge and Wordsworth.

Captures the creativity, the drugs and the whole Romantic shooting gallery really beautifully. Great cast too, John Hannah as Wordsworth and Linus Roache and Samantha Morton as the Coleridges.

  • Radiation: Big bang theory,

Thanks Craig, I suppose I could get off my Bob Peck high horse and give Martin the benefit of the doubt.

Sigh I remember the days of Gallipoli and The Bounty when Mel was sex on a stick. And especially the hawt repressed sizzling with Diane Keaton in Mrs Soffel. The only prison based romance to touch it is Tim Roth and Juia Ormond in Captives. Phew!

  • Busytown: Holiday reading lust,

Just finished Wolf Hall and it's fair dripping with atmosphere, and eloquent turns of phrase. I wonder if it'll mean a flurry of readers deciding that maybe historical fiction can be literary or vice versa.

next on the reading list is the new Jasper Fforde - "Shades of Grey". His Thursday Next books are bloody good fun.

I want to read Cormac McCarthy's The Road too (before the movie comes out) and to listen to Nick Cave and Warren Ellis's soundtrack which sounds to be suitable sparse and moody.

  • Radiation: Big bang theory,

Backing right up to "Modern family" ... not bad at all. I loved the OMG LOL WTF - why the face, but we got hysterical at the moment where the family announced his partner was a tad dramatic, which he denied and then the lights dimmed, The Lion King music, kicked in and cue the spotlight and then he enters, holding the adopted baby aloft. Lovely.

Last time we'd laughed so much was at the KFC ad for those Crusher drinks came on, when the whole household has been rotor-ing with gastroenteritis.

And speaking of Triffid remake (I agree, utterly lacking in character interest despite having a surprisingly non B list cast), what do y'all think about the Edge of Darkness movie remake? I have surprised myself with my vehement feeling that this is wrong.
Bob Peck approaches perfection to a Willie Nelson backdrop
    Time of the Preacher

Oh and I still think plutonium is scary, even if Martin Campbell thinks we don't care anymore.
