Some old school, family Fun Ho toy . . .

What a nice bit of sculpture. While I'm no expert that looks like one of the rarer Fun Hos.

In 1976 I bought a Fun Ho twin-engined aeroplane at the New Brighton market. As I'd never seen one like that it caught my fancy. Someone who knew about these things identified it as being finished in RNZAF training colours, while implying that $25 was a bit on the high side. When I put it on TradeMe in 2009, even though it had endured some rough play by a couple of generations of littlies. it ended up paying me 50c for every week I'd owned it.

BUT -ever heard a pair of paradise sheldrake males fighting? And the ducks having a go at each other to the side? Waua!

Well they've pretty much got Avonside to themselves now, but since they developed a taste for city life they're rowdier than Sydney flying foxes in the fig season. I've seen a squabbling paradise drake land on the roof of a parked car in Avonside Drive. He staggered about in the slipstream from a passing bus before relaunching into the serious business of sorting out his rival. There was a particulary intrepid pair that attempted to stake their claim on Latimer Square before the quakes. Even a pipe band event wasn't enough to deter them - they simply retired to the far side of the square and set up their own rival racket.

"We are better than that". Heh. Sorry, but that whole thing sounds like an exercise in self-congratulation and narcissism to me.

Perhaps the sentiment of the caller to Sydneys then 2BL, disgusted at Defence Minister Peter Reith's opportunistic beating up of the children overboard myth, would be more appropriate: "What the hell is WRONG with us?"

OMG, it is the newsbiscuit article come to life
    urthquike article

Brilliant. Unfortunately Bill Leak's cartoons are behind the Murdoch paywall now, along with his take on Gillard's strangled vowels:
"So you'll be sending more Australian troops to Afghanistan to die?"
"Well not todie but miebe nixt week."

Now that I have a moment, can I just say that I am very glad the PM didn't say what he was officially alleged to have said? Phew.

Back in 1999 John Howard pretty much said it, and more. While the rapid flip from regional deputy sheriff to Mamma take this badge offa me was amusing at the time, it didn't appear to do him any lasting political damage.

He should totally finance some Scientology-type movie

Battlefield Helensville? Nose tubes and foiled dreads would so complement Craig's inadevertent campiness.

Even if a friend of mine refers to it as Victoria Puddle . As lakes go, it's a tiddler. ;-)

It looked pretty substantial when it was being relined a few months back. There were very large dump trucks depositing some kind of clay-like substance. Liquefaction from the Feb 2011 quake turned it into a wetland with a great central mudflat. Around mid-2011 it was a honking paradise for strutting waterfowl as they staked out their territories.

Full-size people, little boats. It's kind of a tradition.
