  • Capture: Two Tales of a City, in reply to Hebe,

I have resolved to carry the new camera everywhere to build snapping back into my daily life again

Good on you. From those subtle subdued colours 'n tones you appear to be packing a gorgeous wee machine.

Great shot Hebe. On the night of the September 11 attacks, when I was living in Sydney, I dreamed that I was in my brother's Beckenham backyard. Through the branches of a tree I noticed an enormous high rise building somewhere in the distant direction of Brighton. As I was about to ask how long it had been there I noticed that smoke was pouring from the upper storeys.
Your image is spookily like that dream.

Megan Woods addressing today's 3500 strong Save Our Schools rally in South Hagley Park. Nice to see the MP I voted for putting her head above the parapet and sounding like she meant it.

BTW Hekia Parata and Nicky Wagner were invited. Naturally they didn't attend.

Of course everybody (at Public Address one presumes)) thought it was just great that Ecan (or as it was known further South Ecan't) was a democracy that allowed the population base of Christchurch to interfere in the lives of people who lived in North Otago a 180 kms away.

Attempted condescension from the pits of ignorance. If you wish to entertain yourself by conjuring a fantasy of mindless straw people then go for it, but don't expect to be taken seriously. There was a great deal of disquiet over Kerry Burke's asleep at the wheel stewardship of ECAN which was reflected in the steadily eroding vote for his complacent faction over the last two elections.

  • Speaker: The Democracy-Free Zone, in reply to Russell Brown,

I die a little inside sometimes when I look at the comments on news websites from people bitching at say Lianne Dalziel, asking why she can’t be more supportive of the recovery effort and accusing her of just being out for herself.

    Really? That's just ... weird.

In a more fair-minded and humane post-disaster NZ, 'weird' would be a reasonable reaction to the kind of crude but organised clobbering machine directed at those who'd challenge the autocracy. Unfortunately it's very much the normal order of business. As the only remaining local opposition MP who hasn't been effectively cowed, Dalziel is consistently singled out as a particular threat.

Spring is when the convertibles come out of the shed, right? ;-)

Nice to see, though this may be even more appropriate for a Capture thread.

    Gosh! approx $850.00 !!
    more like Funds Ho..

More than that, even. I was gobsmacked when the bidding almost immediately went apeshit, and the winner was ever so grateful. There's no way I could have bought the equivalent of a nice little point & shoot AND a juicy stash of art materials for $25 back in 1976.

... while I love the New Yorker's long-form pieces on principle the magazine's mandarin house style can tip over into self-parody.

The New Yorker has long practiced its own house style of radical chic by recruiting contributors from the edgier regions of publishing. The limitations of that kind of self-satisfied canned credibility become apparent when a prospective contributor insists on maintaining the edginess that brought them to the magazine's attention in the first place.
