What's weird about pop culture references is the way they cross generations. My 7y.o. has never seen Diff'rent Strokes but 'gets' "What you talkin' 'bout, Willis?"

(and no takers on my '2 x 2 = 4'?? Sometime I use 'I know my twelve times tables' which is also a misquote ... I really should re-rent the movie again shouldn't I?)

  • Hard News: Awesome,

Look at any pregnancy book: the "first month" is sometimes defined as 4, sometimes six weeks. And every "month" thereafter is 4 weeks long.

kinda like how we measure horses in 'hands' right?

Can any linguists out there coin a word for 'too lazy to google'? since both "You're wet. Yes its raining" and 'I've fallen and I can't get up' give an immediate result as to their origins. (All I need to know I can find on Wiki)

My wife and I use the 'I've fallen and I can't get up' line all the time (I say it, and she laughs) usually when we're making fun of old people. A variation thereof is "Two times Two is Four" which isn't* even the correct quote but we both get it (can anyone name that movie?).

When I was younger I used to drop the occassional "I'd buy that for a dollar'.

    [*so I'm wrong, Google/wiki doesn't know everything]

  • Hard News: Awesome,

Let me toss this lit cigarette into the mix:

Palin could easily deal to these scurrilous rumours by releasing the birth certificate and possibly a photo or video segment of the birth (since I'm sure even in ye olde Alaska they're up with the new technology) BUT chooses not to because it suits her to let the fire build because it will all blowback on the Left when she finally does (deal to the rumours).

And yes, it seems ludicrous that a Political figure should have to go to such lengths ('here's my birthing video') but that sadly is the world we live in. The floodgates were opened by those ludicrous impeachment hearings the Right sicced on Clinton all those years ago.

a comment from Russel's link above:

Her views that abstinence only education are supported by about 10% of our society.

She's even more out of touch than McCain.

Nevermind McCain, she's clearly out of touch with her own daughter. If Palin want's to flip-flop on this issue of Abstinence Education then I'd happily give her a free pass. (Since flip flopping = political death)

  • Hard News: Go Us,

I don't know if she wants to run again down the line -- hell, I have my doubts she knows. But even being perceived as backstabbing her party's candidate for the Presidency when it is theirs to lose... Come on. She's not that stupid.

I'm pretty sure* she's planning to run again, although her perceived age may be a problem ie that old chestnut about men become 'distinguished' as they age and women just look old (and if she doesn't FOX will be over-speculating on 'has she had work done/would you trust a vain President'?)

It occurred to me whilst watching both her and Bill's convention speeches that they'd played her cards brilliantly. There was no point in holding back support on Obama since he was going to get the nomination anyway. As things stand now, if Obama is unsuccessful, no-one can blame the Clintons for his failure. And then her supporters can say "we told you so" and she will run unopposed in 2012.

And if he does become President then she'll just have to wait until 2016 (not so good). Unless u-no-wot happens (highly unlikely).

  • Hard News: Go Us,

Another insight into the woman who would be VP? :

City librarian Mary Ellen Emmons will stay, but Police Chief Irl Stambaugh is on his own, Wasilla Mayor Sarah Palin announced Friday. The decision came one day after letters signed by Palin were dropped on Stambaugh's and Emmon's desks, telling them their jobs were over as of Feb. 13, 1997.

The mayor told them she appreciated their service but felt it was time for a change. ''I do not feel I have your full support in my efforts to govern the city of Wasilla. Therefore I intend to terminate your employment ...'' the letter said.

Palin said Friday she now feels Emmons supports her but does not feel the same about Stambaugh. As to what prompted the change, Palin said she now has Emmons' assurance that she is behind her. She refused to give details about how Stambaugh has not supported her, saying only that ''You know in your heart when someone is supportive of you.''

The three met briefly at Wasilla City Hall Friday afternoon, and Palin called them twice at Stambaugh's home before making the decision.

Palin said she asked Emmons if she would support efforts to merge the library and museum operations. Emmons said she would, according to Palin.

    How does that quote go?
"When they came for the Police Chief I said nothing, when they came for the Librarians I remained silent, when they came for me ..."??

If Peters decides to flee (from the SFO) I'm pretty sure we'll find him in Alaska ...

  • Hard News: Awesome,

Groups that oppose abortion rights had been thrilled with Mr. McCain’s selection of Ms. Palin, the governor of Alaska, as his running mate, partly because of her opposition to abortion. It is not clear how social conservatives will respond to the latest news [of the unmarried daughter’s pregnancy], but the initial reaction of several delegates to the convention here was supportive of the family

Has anyone asked the PUMA's what they think? Or does contrary opinion only count when they are bagging a Democrat Convention?

  • Hard News: Go Us,

    Russell
I have just read the whole thread and frankly I think (hope) there will be a time when you will remember this as a low point of your blogging life
Bad enough that this sort of thing takes place elsewhere but there is no need to go hunting for dirt

Sorry, but I can't agree with this sentiment. 'Hunting for dirt'?? That sounds like traditional media bitching about whether the blogosphere actually break stories, or just make shit up. It was because of the blogosphere that this story was debunked so quickly. Why? Because those digging for 'dirt' found none, and reported it.

If Palin was a Democrat there is no way the MSM would have ignored these rumours/questions, they would have been all over it. And yes, they would have had a bevy of 'analysts' debating whether it was a baby bump or a prosthetic device used by Hollywood; followed by another bevy of medical 'experts' questioning the circumstances of the birth.

Does that make it right (the rightwing MSM are bottom feeders so the leftwing MSM should do likewise)? Well, actually I still think the questions are valid. It would seem that whilst Palin believes it is not a woman's right to choose an abortion (because a fetus has rights too) it is a woman's right to choose whether or not you get on a plane, take an 8 hour flight, and then drive to a small town (skipping the city hospital in the place you landed at) to have the baby delivered by your family doctor, even though the amniotic fluid started leaking that morning and you know your baby has Downs Syndrome and you're one month premature.

I'd call that risky behaviour but then I don't have the same faith that Palin has, who I presume was confident it would all turn out as God intended.

And if Palin was a Democrat I'd still call it risky behaviour. Or PC hippy bullsh!t.
