  • Hard News: Emma Hart is a werewolf,

    Emma Hart is a werewolf

And I was just trying to come to terms with her as a green Orion slave girl!

  • Hard News: Only in a relative sense,

Yes, I would second (or third) the suggestion of invoking the CGA. That sort of behaviour is unacceptable and they need to be called on it.

While talking about Sauvignon Blancs... I was doing some tidying in my 'cellar' and discovered a 'lost' 1987 Sauvignon Blanc! I am sort of afraid to open it!

  • Hard News: Trading Trade Me?,

The Herald site may well look good and be very useful, but I have to avoid it. I do not know if it is a Norton/Firewall/Spyware interaction problem, but it hangs my brouser and I can't get internet access untill I have removed the spyware from my computer. It is only the Herald site that gives me this grief.

  • Up Front: Will Work for Foo,

Not quite on thread, but I was checking out of a hotel on Sunday and 'enjoyed' this conversation from the person in line in front of me...

Guest: I would like to get some of that moisturiser that they have in the Spa?
Reception: I am sorry the Spa is not open on Sundays
Guest: So the Spa is not open?
Reception: No, I am sorry the Spa is not open on Sundays
Guest: When will the Spa be open?
Reception: It will be open on Monday
Guest: And it is closed all day today?
    Reception: Yes
Guest: Where can I get some of that moisturiser that they have in the Spa?
Reception: I am afraid that they only sell it at the Spa
Guest: And the Spa is closed today?
    Reception: Yes?
Guest: When will it be open?

  • Up Front: Hellfire's a Promise Away,

I quite like the word "munter"

I have recently re-found 'boof-head'... it has a nice expressive ring to it

  • Hard News: Flu diversions,

    Seek it out

Was early for a meeting in Melbourne a few years ago and was idly window shopping, and I stumbled over a whole table of B-grade sci-fi DVDs for $2 each. I therefore have a library, most as yet un-watched!

And a question for the group: Don't you think it's a wee bit arrogant to assume that the human race couldn't be wiped out by a virus without our help?

Natural viruses, like all living things evolve (if you go in for that sort of thing)... and any virus that kills 100% of its hosts does not have a big future! An artificial or created virus may not suffer from this evolutionary restriction?

What do we think about a South-East Asian immigrant falling foul of the SPCA and NZ law by slaughtering and eating a dog or cat, or a New Zealander falling foul of Indian authorities and law for slaughtering and eating a cow? Whether laws come from a religious base or from a jointly held view of morality they are the laws of the particular land that you are in. They develop and change with the prevailing social mores.

I am all for social diversity and tolerance but we can only have one rule of law at any one time… if the Malaysian immigrant can have two wives, why can’t I… and if the Malaysian man living here can have two wives then surely a Malaysian woman can have two husbands? Not!

Yeah, if you look at ACT's voting record on the big conscience votes of the last term (and I wonder if we'll get any of those this term) they're not really a socially libertarian party at all, just fiscally.

Yes indeed... here is an interesting analysis and a way to test where your personal views sit.

y'know, compulsory national sex education program...

Yes, that went out with the drift away from cycling to school and associated facilities.

    But more seriously -

found this hugely distasteful. People entering into a polygamous relationship ... being asked to say which one is their 'proper' wife

    And -

The day we start making special laws that allow people to do stuff others can do just because of their religion

Isn't there a fundamental conflict in these two positions? Our laws spring from a judeo-christian base where you may have one (official) partner only and the laws of the land are the laws of the land. If we allow people to bring with them their standards of law how can this be selective. The same people might also want state sanctioned sharia courts here as well as they are in the UK, with all that comes with that

A very complex and difficult question!
